Koi Shape, Colours and pattern develop over a long period of time. There is colour under the skin of koi, as the koi develops the colours and patterns form.

Most of the koi for sale in the koi shed are under 1 year old or up to 2yrs old, these koi are also online and the price reflects how young these koi are. They will develop colours and patterns as they mature, we sell a wide range of koi online, some could be breeders and show koi and some are pond koi, to appeal to individuals taste.

All the koi at Windsor Fish hatchery are hand graded by the breeder," Tom" at many different stages of their growth, so we end up with the best possible breeders and koi to sell to you our customers.

Koi are first selected for breeding from the front ponds boys and girls are kept separate all the time and only selected koi are put together once a year, Tom selects the koi according to the result he is trying to achieve.

The koi for sale online now are koi bred last year 2013, to give you an idea of what you will see instore and online from last years breeding, i will explain what koi Tom was able to breed and some of the resulting koi. with an explaination as to what you can expect as these koi develop

In this blog we will cover Tancho Koi

Tancho are koi for the purist, in particular, the Japanese for its extreme simplicity of pattern and symbolism it evokes. In Japan the national bird is the rare Tancho, or dancing crane,(crus japonensis) which sports a round, red head marking, This reminds the Japanese people of their flag, as does the head of the tancho Koi.

The three varieties of Tancho Koi Explained

The classic Tancho is the Tancho Kohaku, a pure white fish with only its head hi (hi means on top of the koi's head in this instance) to set off the snowy skin. Traditionally, this hi is circular, of an even red and placed centrally between the eyes. The more perfect the circle, the more valuable the Koi becomes. For every classic Tancho produced there will be hundreds more in which the head pattern  is disappointing.

In Tancho Sanke , the head hi is complemented by sumi (black) markings on the body and in some oor all of the fins. A Tancho Sanke hi should sit on a clear white grounds, with the first sumi ( Black) markings appearing on the body.

The third type of Tancho is the  Shiro Utsuri with head hi only. Koi of a very high standard in the latter two of these koi variety are rare so i have used pictures from a book to display mature Koi  varieties.

This is not a detail explanation of Tancho Koi, there are different markings which influence the value of these koi

Windsor Fish Hatchery grow on our best koi in these varieties, you can see tancho koi in the female front pond.

Young Tancho Koi are brought down to the koi shed for sale occasionally. They are expensive as there are very few of them per spawning.click to see koi for sale now
