 18month old male kujaku

In this blog we will cover Kujaku Koi

Kujaku, or Kujaku Ogon as they are still sometimes known , are highly regarded by the japanese, as the patterning on a good specimen can rival that of a Go Sanke. Like Goshiki they are said to be five- coloured koi, however not all modern examples display white, black, red, brown and yellow markings.

They were first bred in Ojiya in 1960 by toshio Hirasawa. Many of the first Kujaku (the word literally means 'peacock') were Dositu (large Scale) this is the result of the shusui influence in the breeding.

Juding standards for modern Kujaku have become quite flexible. For instance, 'interesting ' head patterning (provided there is no black intruding) is just as acceptable as plain red or platinum with in the patterning. A sub- variety, the Beni kujaku is predominantly red.

Good examples of  Kujaku Koi are held in high esteem by the Japanese. The more you look at it, the better it gets - the head marking are e regular , while the body has a strong metallic Matsuba scalation over a subtle colour combination.

Windsor fish hatchery breeds Kujaku every year, the price the reflects the quality of the colouration and the pattern and also the size on the koi although is not depend on the size. Dositu Kujaku are always more expensive as there are fewer spawned.
