Feeding Koi and Goldfish

At the windsor Fish hatchery online  www.windsorfishhatchery.com.au  we have a range of food for koi & goldfish.

pellets and flake in various sizes which float, bringing the fish to the surface and allowing you to net out any uneaten food.

providing a balanced diet containing between 25% to 42% protein and all the necessary trace elements for Pond fish.

The food we sell is the food we use in the hatchery. There are different blends to provide variety; some are rich in wheat germ, which is easily digested and therefore ideal for feeding in cooler weather; others contain algae meal and carotene's to enhance the colour pigments of the fish, and others are designed to encourage rapid growth.

Choose a pellet size small enough to be eaten by all your fish, or at the hatchery we are happy to provide you with the exact sizes you need, online  our sizes go from 1mm, 3,mm, 5mm, 8mm and 10mm all floating.

Flake foods can be crushed to provide food for fish fry, but even tiny fish will nibble at larger pellets as they soften.

Pellet foods may seem rather dull to us, but fish love them. Fish tend to be quite conservative in their tastes, so that , once accustomed to one particular brand, they may take a little time  to adapt to other foods.

Feed you fish during the day rather than late evening, as it takes them longer to digest food in the cooler overnight temperatures.

Fish are cold blood animals whose body temperature, and rate of activity, drops with the external temperature. Fish should therefore be fed less in cooler weather and more in warmer weather. except at very hot temperatures (over 35C/89F), when you should reduce the amount.

We don't sell any food we don't use our selves, did you know we were the first hatchery to try hikari in the late 80's we feed it to our koi, and became the biggest seller of hikari foods. I don't suggest you feed hikari all the time, as variety is essential. but its a great product.

Do not be fooled by the hungry attitude of the fish; their small digestive systems are not suited to large meals.

Feed them small amounts three to four times a day in warm weather. When you are feeding the fish, give them only as much as they will consume in two to five minutes.

Sera is another product we have been selling for years, we have come to trust the high quality food for our goldfish, you don't get cloudy water, and the fish do really well on it, especially the fancy goldfish such as Orandas, Ranchu, Ryukin, Pearlscale.

I like to feed the spirulina at least 3 times a week over 7 days. Goldfish need a lot of fibre to process the protein in the foods

Most Koi will become tame in time.

Accustom the fish to being fed at the same spot on the pond, dont scatter the food too widely, and stand motionless beside the pond so that the koi get used to seeing you while they are feeding.

Eventually some of the bolder fish will come up to the surface to take food from your hand.

There are a lot of different brands on the market.

We feed JPD to all our breeders and the hatchery, Koi in the growing ponds get Dainichi because of the high protein or JPD Shori for growth.

Baby koi get JPD nori to meet their requirements.

JPD Yamato is great because it will bring the colours out in the koi earlier than they would come out if we didn't feed this food.

Koi can live as long as you and I,

Its really important to get them good quality food and a variety of it.

Don't feed high protein for too long as you could damage the liver.

One season of high protein over 42% , in the first  years is all you need then feed every couple of seasons, so once a year in the first 5 years.

If you are after size, or fish are different , some will naturally be bigger than others.

Koi from the same breeding cycle can be 5cm all the way thru to 30cm even though they are the same age.

When we are selling fish online most are from the same breeding cycle. The bigger the koi the more likely these koi will be the jumbo koi.

Variety, Variety , Variety is our catch phase when it comes to feeding koi.

Summer feeding is different than winter, in summer you are trying to meet all there nutritional needs plus put on size,

(keeps them safe from the birds over winter)

shape, health, and vitality. to prepare them for winter.

Winter you are maintaining their condition without over feeding.

Over feeding in winter could kill the koi as they can't digest the food in cold water, but mainly you have the added risk of sending the pond water off.

What we mean by that is the bacteria in the cold water dies off as the water gets colder, if you are feeding to much the toxins coming from the koi when they expel the food is not being converted to a safe product.

This means toxins build up in the water, till the water pH drops, oxygen levels become very low and ammonia starts.

Once you have ammonia in the pond you will lose your biggest fish first as they breathe the most water  in through their gills.

As they die they also pollute the pond and more fish die. To help prevent this happening you should always put a pond block in the water at any change of season.

There are two sizes in the pond blocks 1kg does 50,000ltrs & 200grams does 1000ltrs.

pond blocks contain the food for the bacteria and rid the pond of toxins.

There are other products we use to keep the water clear of algae, chlorine from tap water, copper and other harmful chemicals. No matter whether its a pond or aquarium "its all about the water"
