Keeping Oranda Goldfish

Tags: fish food hood

What to look for!

Typically the Oranda has a short body, the depth of which is roughly two - thirds the length. The dorsal (top) fin should be single and high, with all other fins paired and long. The Caudal (tail) fins should be divided, With the trailing edge of the tail to be more like the square edge of the Moor and Veil tail.

The Hood or cap of an Oranda develops from white spots and a filmy covering in three area's: the top of the head, around the eyes and around the gills. In all Oranda's look for a generous width across the head and between the eyes, making a good size head for cap development.

The main characteristic of the Oranda is the development of the Hood. In addition to the hood is the many varieties you can buy from Metallic, single Coloured, variegated, Calico, tri coloured, Red and black, blue, blue and white, black and white, black, red and white, redcaps, white, yellow caps.

Some Oranda's are developed so the hood develops around the entire head, whilst others such as the redcap's hood develops on the top only

A guide to thrive!

If you want your Oranda to thrive, think water and Food. Water without ammonia, clear of any toxins and a pH of around 7.4 to 8 is the best parameters, They do great in both aquariums and ponds, they do grow quicker in ponds, they are cold water Fish and can stay out all year round. All our Oranda's are kept in ponds outside.

Food means a large variety but not of the same type, wheatgerm, spirulina, algae wafers, shrimp, protein, plant matter and live are very important, if they are kept outside they will eat any live bugs that develop in the pond and the algae that grows there, they also need plant matter of a natural variety, you can grow plants in your pond, or buy live plants from you local for your aquarium,.

Live foods, can be daphnia, mozzie wrigglers, earth worms, bugs of any type, worms, shrimp we sell at different times of the year, caterpillars of any type.

Protein is found in all processed foods, don't give just protein, mix it up with other processed foods such as wheat germ,  mixed flake ,algae wafers, dried shrimp. If your fish are outside stop feeding all protein foods in winter until the water heats back up in spring, feed more plant matter and wheat germ.

At the Windsor fish hatchery on the central coast we breed and sell a variety of Oranda's, new goldfish go up twice a month or more often. The pictures are taken by us of the actual fish you will receive, unless those fish are listed as assorted then the picture is some of the fish from the batch you will receive.

All our goldfish are fed a large variety of foods and kept in the correct water requirements for the fish. They are disease free when they leave the hatchery, you have a live arrival guarantee with all our fish, and can ask for guidance with your pond, tank or goldfish contact us at [email protected]
