Handmade Pirate Costume for Dogs

As Halloween quickly approaches, I thought I would give you a look at my dog's handmade pirate costume this year.  This costume is inspired by Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Carribean.

Ok, my total dork confession.  I love taking photos of my dog.  As some of you may know, my pup Rocket has an Instagram account.  Yes, I'm one of those people.   Rocket has such a laid-back personality, as long as treats are involved he happily poses for the camera.

Before you check out the photos, have a peek at this video of Rocket in his Costume.  I convinced my husband to get involved and we put together this fun (and totally cheesy) “movie”.  I have to wonder what goes through Rocket's mind when I do this stuff to him.  He puts up with so much and I appreciate him letting me be such a goof!

The majority of his costume is hand-made with the exception of the hat and wig.  I purchased that from Target for $4.99 and then added my own beads. The rest of the material is scrap fabric that was lying around the house.

I used an old pillowcase for the base of the outfit and a dog sweater for my pattern. Then, I cut out a piece of square fabric and glued the vest and belt onto it.  I put velcro on the back to make it stick to the main part of the costume.

I wrapped a piece of fabric around his waist for the belt and added a piece of white material to create the sash.  The entire costume took me about 2 hours to make.

Of course, no pirate is complete without his treasure so I bought chocolate covered coins from the store and this little wooden crate for $3.00.

Total Cost: $12.00

If you are into DIY, I highly recommend rummaging through your house to use leftover fabric, old shirts, pillowcases, etc. to save money.
