We got our hands on these dog treat mixes and let our Shepherd mix, Sasha, test them out!
Treat Flavors and Ingredients
At the time of this review, Whisk & Wag offers three main treat mixes and also one limited release:
- Honey & Oats Treat Mix (non-GMO)
- Apple & Cinnamon Treat Mix (non-GMO)
- Cheddar & Herb Treat Mix
- LIMITED RELEASE: Sweet Potato & Spice Treat Mix
For our review, we only tested out their 3 main treat mixes and let Sasha taste each.
All of their baking mixes are made from high quality ingredients, full of vitamins and minerals your dog needs, low in calories and fat, and free of grains like wheat and corn. A few of their mixes (currently Apple & Cinnamon and Honey & Oats) are also non-GMO.
Baking the “Homemade” Dog Treats
The baking process for these treats is so easy that all of the instructions fit on the lid of the container. We started by pre-heating our oven to 350 degrees, and then called on our toddler for help with whisking the treats. Tip: while baking the treats can be fun for the whole family, beware of potential tears when they realize they don’t get to eat a “cookie” when finished!
Once we had everything mixed really well, I divided the mix and rolled them into little balls and placed them on a non-stick baking sheet. The container says you can get about 25 dog treats out of this, but being we have a 55lb shepherd, we opted to make each one a little bigger. Once you have them all placed on a baking sheet, simply press them down until they are 1/4″ thick. I used the bottom of the treat mix container, but you can also use a fork.
Into the oven they go! After 20 minutes of baking, the treats were finished and placed on a wire rack to cool off. I was surprised to realize the treats didn’t have too strong of a smell after baking. I assumed the Apple Cinnamon would be pretty aromatic, but it does make sense that they are a bit less potent than a baked apple cinnamon cookie (after all, it’s missing all of the sugar).
At this point, my dog wasn’t even excited or asking for one, because she assumed they were regular cookies which she obviously never gets.
But once she realized these are for her, she took a quick smell, looked at me again as if this was a trick, and then devoured it. Afterwards, she sat next to the counter where the treats were resting and whined for more! I gave her a couple more and then had to put them in a bag to hide the drool-inducing smell.
Thoughts and Final Verdict
Overall, I was very pleased with this product. My dog obviously loved the treats (Apple & Cinnamon was her favorite), but I also like knowing that the treats are incredibly fresh and that it can create a bit of family bonding time. Although, next time I’ll make sure we bake a batch of cookies at the same time for the toddler!
