Online free Text to Speech

I find a great way to proof read is to use text to Speech software.  When I listen, I hear what I wrote, not what I had intended to write.  There are some pretty good software packages out there.  But you don't always want to install or buy yet another program.  If you are running an OS like Chrome, there might not be a downloadable version.

There are a long list of websites that have a reasonable on-line text to speech capability.  Nearly all limit your text to 250 characters or less.  I did find two that allowed your text to be 1000 characters or more.  These are great if you only want to listen to a paragraph or two at a time.

You can Copy and Paste up to 1000 characters.  The selection of voices is small but the default sound is plenty fine.  There is no pause control.

Some voices are much better than others.  I find Graham UK the most interesting.  There is no pause control and starting the speech can take several second.  I would go as far as calling it sluggish starting up but you can copy and paste up to 5000 characters when I use the Opera web browser.  For some reason, I can only paste in about 250 characters when I use Explorer or Firefox.

If you are looking for a package to download, I'll have to get back to you with a recommendation.  It should have the feature where you can highlight text and press CTRL C to copy, to make it speak.  If you are forced to copy and paste between windows, it's too much effort.  Verbose Text to Speech does this.  Natural Reader doesn't.

If you want to do a poor-man's audiobook or radio play, Natural Reader is worth looking at.  It allows you to put tags into your text to tell the program which voice to use. It is on my list to give this a try when I get a chance.

If like this type of information and want more, you might like my book.

It is available on for Kindle on Amazon.com and all other ebook formats on Smashwords.  It is also available in paperback from Amazon.  And if you are wondering, I enrolled it in Matchbook.  If you buy the paperback, you will be able to download a Kindle version for free!
