5 Tips for Moving In Together

Deciding to move in with your Partner is a special time. You’ve made the commitment to live life together, perhaps you’ve even got married, and now your paths are intertwined. As exciting as moving in can be, there are some things you should consider for the sake of your relationship.

When you know where each person stands, you can move forward in confidence without there being any misunderstandings. It’s important to set boundaries now before anything becomes a big issue. Take a look at these tips when you’re ready to move in with someone.

1. Side of The Bed

For some, this isn’t a big deal. For others, it’s a huge deal. If you’re just starting to sleep in the same bed together every night, it’s time to have the discussion.

Who wants to sleep on which side of the bed? If you don’t have a preference, it doesn’t mean your partner doesn’t. Ask your partner which side of the bed they would like to sleep on and take it from there.

2. Your Finances

It can take couples some time to figure out how to work their joint finances. When you’re used to buying your own food and paying all the bills, it can be hard to divide the expenses evenly. Similarly, if your partner is moving into your Property, you’ll need to make sure it feels like your partner’s property too.

If you’re married, you may want to consider a quitclaim deed that will allow you to put your partner’s name on the deed of the property. This way, you both have a fair claim to the property if you’re both investing in it.

3. Chores

If you’re both living in the same space, it’s only fair that you both contribute to the chores. If you find that you’re the only one cleaning up or washing clothes, it could be time to have a chat with your partner. If it helps, create a chore list that divides the chores equally.

This will ensure that you both have time to relax and do things you enjoy, whether you do them together or separately.

4. Redecorate

If you’re living in a home with someone else, the space needs to be for both of you. Your taste may not necessarily match that of your partner’s. This will be great practice for negotiating on lots of different topics.

Take some time to visit stores and look at designs online together. Share some ideas with one another and try to find something you can agree on. When you find decor that you both can enjoy, the home will start to become a space for both of you.

5. Prioritize Each Other

Life is busy and it can be easy to get caught up in long to-do lists. Sharing a home gives you ample opportunity to spend time together doing things you enjoy. This is the best way to build a strong relationship that will stand the test of time.
