How to Register to Vote in Florida

If you want to Vote for the Presidential elections on November 3, 2020, you’ll need to register soon. Florida cuts off registration 29 days before the election. Don’t wait until the last minute to ensure you can vote.

You have a few ways to register to vote in Florida. All you’ll need is your Florida driver’s license or identification card to get started. Here are your options:

• Online: RegistertoVoteFlorida may be the fastest and easiest way. Follow the steps to enter your license or ID information, name, address, and the last four digits of your Social Security number to submit.
• In person: You can register onsite at Florida voter registration agencies, including armed forces recruitment offices, libraries, and offices providing public assistance.
• By mail: Download and complete the Florida voter registration form and mail it to your county’s Supervisor of Elections from the list of addresses provided with the form.

To qualify to vote in Florida, you’ll need to be:

• A U.S. citizen;
• A legal resident of the county in Florida in which you’d like to register;
• At least 16 years of age to pre-register or 18 or older to register to vote.

If you’re a felon who hasn’t had voting rights restored or you’ve been adjudicated as mentally incapacitated in any state, you aren’t eligible to register to vote in Florida.

Am I Registered to Vote in Florida?

If it’s been a while since you’ve voted and you’re unsure whether you’re registered, check the Florida Department of State’s online voter information lookup to confirm your voting status. You’ll need your name, date of birth, and Florida ID card or driver’s license number to locate your record. You can also call the Voter Assistance Hotline at 1(866) 308-6739 to find out.

Early Voting in Florida

Early voting is available in Florida and runs between the third and 10th day before the election. Florida voters may vote at any of the early voting sites provided within the county. The state will announce the locations 30 days prior to the elections. You’ll need to take an identification containing a signature and photo for verification, such as a Florida license or ID card, to vote.

Voting in Florida on Election Day

Your Voter Registration card will include the location of your neighborhood polling place. Or you could check for your polling place location on the same online page where you can look up your voter registration status.

All Florida polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for the general election on November 3. Don’t forget to bring your voter registration card. And if you’re voting for the first time, you’ll also need your Florida driver’s license or ID card.

Why Voting Is Important

It’s your right and duty to vote. Voting gives you the power to decide how your state and country is run. Your participation in the general election may not seem like it will make a difference, but there have been many cases where elections were too close to call. Just a few more voters could have swayed very close elections either way. Some Florida ballot measures coming up in November you shouldn’t miss include:

• Amendment 2: To increase the state minimum wage to $15 by 2026;
• Homestead Property Tax Discount for Spouses of Deceased Veterans Amendment (HJR 877): Transfers the tax benefit to the surviving spouse.
