Wearing scary costumes and decorating your home in the most eeriest of ways definitely adds to the fun during Halloween. There are so many easy ways to decorate the interior and the exterior of your home for Halloween and do it for cheap!

This year I'm hosting our Halloween party at our home and I was looking for some unique ways to create some large, creepy decorations rather than spending hundreds of dollars on large decor from the Halloween stores. I started looking around my craft room and through my Halloween decor to see if any of the supplies I had would help inspire my spooky creation.

I came across one of my plugin lightup Pumpkin decorations and an awesome idea popped in my head! Pumpkins are a great representation of Halloween and can be scary or cute. Of course, I wanted to go with scary and that's when I decided to create The Pumpkin Man! Looking around my craft room, I found everything that I needed to create him.

In this tutorial I'll be focusing on creating just the head of the Pumpkin Man. I'm currently working on creating his body and hands which I'll follow up with another post within the next week. So make sure to check back to find the tutorial.

If you're not looking to build the complete Pumpkin Man, then this tutorial is all that you'll need. The pumpkin head itself is still creepy enough to use alone as a decoration. This piece would be great to use as a center piece for your Halloween party!

Supplies Needed to Create Your Pumpkin Man Head

A hat box or round gift box (any size works, it just depends on how big you want the head to be)Large brown paper bag

Creating Your Base

Take your hat box (lid included) and Great Stuff Gap Filler and start spraying it on the hat box. Give the Great Stuff time to completely expand and dry (I waited approximately 6-10 minutes) before adding another layer. Make sure you've covered the entire box. Keep repeating this process until you no longer see the shape of the box, as well as accomplishing the size you want. Keep in mind that it doesn't have to be perfect at this stage—we're just creating the base.

Once your final layer of Great Stuff is dry and tack free start adding bunches of wadded up Toilet Paper, covering it until you can no longer see any Great Stuff. Use hot glue to glue on the pieces of toilet paper.

Tip: Try to keep the toilet paper wads puffy.

Using a paint brush and Mod Podge, brush a thin layer of Mod Podge over all of the toilet paper.

Next, take a layer of tissue paper and lay it down over the toilet paper. Continue adding tissue paper until you've completely covered the entire piece. Add another layer of Mod Podge over the tissue paper. Allow the Mod Podge to completely dry.

Tip: The reason that I added Mod Podge to the tissue paper prior to painting is to prevent the tissue paper from tearing. This gives the tissue paper a more sturdy base. If you choose to skip this step, prepare for disappointment because your tissue paper will be almost non-existent.

Creating Sections & Depth

Now take your yarn (starting from the bottom) and start tying off sections(section off the same way you would cut a pie). Make sure to pull and tie the yarn tight and firm in order to make indented pumpkin sections.

Creating the Eyes & Mouth

Creating the eyes and mouth is super easy. Tear off about two-feet of toilet paper and start twisting and rolling it in between your hands from top to bottom.

Once you've got your string of toilet paper, take your glue gun and draw out the shape of your first eye. You can use the eye shape I used for my pumpkin head or use which ever shape your heart desires! Take your rolled up toilet paper and follow the outline of your hot glue. Repeat this step for the second eye as well as the mouth.

Cover the ridges you created for the eyes and mouth with a thin layer of Mod Podge and cover the ridges with a sheet of tissue paper. Once again brush a thin layer of Mod Podge over the ridges and allow to dry completely.

Take your glue gun and add really thin strings of hot glue from the top to the bottom of the mouth.

Constructing the Stem

Hot glue the cardboard toilet paper tube vertically to the top center of the pumpkin head. Make sure to stuff the toilet paper tube half-way so you don't crush the tube in the next step.

Using a thin brown paper bag, glue the bad around the toilet paper tube (make sure to leave about two or three inches of the bag at the top to twist.)

My Favorite Part—Painting!

There are so many different ways to paint the great pumpkin man and I encourage you to get as creative as you can, if not—you can use my painting tips below!

I usedApple Barrel Matte Acrylicquick drying paint. Here's the exact colors I used:

Pumpkin Orange-20588E

Harvest Orange-20589E

Jack-O-Lantern-21472E

Parakeet (green)-20740ENutmeg Brown-20521E

Purple Pansy-21488E

Start out by painting your entire pumpkin head with the Pumpkin Orange (don't paint the inside of the eyes, mouth, or stem).

While the paint is still wet (helps with blending the colors better), using a wide paint brush—lightly start brushing Harvest Orange over the pumpkin (your not completely covering the Pumpkin Orange, you're just adding some dimension.)

Using a 50/50 mixture of Purple Pansy and Nutmeg Brown and a thin paint brush—brush your paint mixture along the indented lines of your pumpkin (the lines we created with the yarn). Keep brushing up and down until you've blended the line, leaving behind just a dark shadow.

Paint the inside of the mouth and eyes with Purple Pansy. Paint the outer ridges of the mouth and eyes with Jack-O-Lantern and then lightly brush on Nutmeg Brown.

Paint your stem with Parakeet (green), allowing some of the brown paper bag to show through. Brushing from the bottom of the stem outward, paint two-inch brush strokes around the entire base of the stem. Lightly brush on Nutmeg Brown to decrease some of the bright green coloring.

Once your paint has completely dried, go ahead and hot glue your eye balls on.

We haven't carved our pumpkins yet, so I didn't have any real pumpkin seeds. So, I just created and printed pumpkin seeds to glue on his mouth. If you don't have any real pumpkin seeds to use, here's a copy of my pumpkin seeds to download and print-.

Roll some more toilet paper to create the vines and paint them green. If you have some green tissue paper, you can do the same thing—that way you don't have to take the time to paint it.

Glue on the leaves on the vines. I also created some pumpkin leaves for your to download and print-!

Optional Last Step

If you're planning on displaying your Pumpkin Man outdoors, you'll want to make sure that he's waterproof. Using your Mod Podge clear acrylic sealer, brush a thin final coat over your pumpkin head. In addition to keeping it waterproof, it also keeps it dust and fingerprint resistant (another reason to complete this step even if your pumpkin man is indoors.) You can use matte or shine Mod Podge, it just depends on how you want it to look.
