Foster carers like all parents will know how important it is to keep children entertained and happy this Summer – especially after the pressures of the lockdowns. And Foster Carers should also be aware of the campaign ‘Summer of Play’ which is all about making sure youngsters get back into the great outdoors. There’s no better way for children to keep fit than by keeping active: cycling, swimming – outdoor games like ‘Rounders’ – and just general exploring are all good for physical health and mental wellbeing. One of the most rewarding things about fostering is participating with children in the fun things they find to do. 

Foster care should be about fun and fitness this summer!

This is a series we are running through the summer months to suggest a range of activities and pastimes for children and young people. There is plenty out there for foster carers and the children they are looking after to get involved in. And a lot of these activities are free. So this summer we all need to have some fun in the fresh air and get those bodies moving again. This is Britain so we can expect some ‘umbrella days’. That means we will be suggesting some indoor activities – including online events – to make this summer a fun, interesting time when it’s a rainy day. 

Fostering a sense of adventure for Summer 2021

It’s been great to see so many of our foster carers at the support groups we have been running. These will be continuing and it will be great if our foster carers can share some of their summer experiences. So which museums had the best exhibitions – which attractions were the most fun. We can all learn and benefit from each other. We’d also like to encourage our foster carers to have children write to us telling us about what they’ve enjoyed doing this summer. It would be great to get some pictures too! And everything foster children get involved in this summer should generate a rich source of material for those memory boxes. What better way to forget all the pressures of lockdown than to be out there creating a treasure trove of memories to look back on.

We hope to feature a lot of what our foster children have had fun doing this summer in our end-of-year newsletter. We plan to run a competition based around the ‘most fun things’ our fostering families found to do this year! More of this later…

Wherever your foster family is living in the UK you’ll almost certainly be close to a city, the countryside, or the seaside. So there will be plenty of variety – activities that can be informative and entertaining – often both. 

Museums have a tremendous amount to offer.

If you are near London we have museums that are famous the world over. In this series, we shall be listing some of what they have to offer. The Natural History Museum is one of the most popular. A fostering career with Rainbow
