Do you have a nutmeg allergy?
In the fall, everybody seems to be doing a pumpkin spice latte, which of course, always includes Nutmeg. Unfortunately, I am one of the rare people in the world who are allergic to nutmeg. In fact, with that quick search on Twitter, very few people report being allergic to nutmeg at all. The frustration with this allergy is that for me, it is not one of those sneeze-and-it-goes-away allergies, but it causes me to start choking and my throat to swell up.
To make the situation, even worse, nutmeg is usually blended into the most rare of dishes. In the most recent case, the nutmeg was thrown into cheese in a fondue at the Melting Pot. Nutmeg is also relatively blended in with the other flavors of the food, so by the time I even notice the nutmeg, it is too late.
The first time I even noticed this Nutmeg Allergy was on a trip to the island of Grenada, which is considered the nutmeg capital of the world. Every time I took a breath, the situation seem to get worse till I realized that I was essentially breathing in the minute specs of nutmeg that were floating in the air.
How rare is a nutmeg allergy?
In a recent study of 589 patients, not one person reported or came up positive for nutmeg. There are sporadic cases reported, but if you see from the frequency of a study, it’s not very common.
I found only one Reddit thread even mentioning it.
And only a handful of people on Twitter.
Fall isn't fun for someone with a nutmeg allergy. I can't taste anything Pumpkin Spice or any fall pies.

I'm allergic to nutmeg. I know it's a weird & uncommon allergy. Please stop announcing your pumpkin spiced drinks and foods during this difficult time. The inner White girl in my cries.
I'm also allergic to cabbage. Don't mention Irish food in March. The inner Irish in me cries.

Only four separate people even tweeted with the hashtag: #nutmegallergy
Is nutmeg a tree nut?
No, nutmeg is not a tree nut and is actually more closely related to the coriander family.
How often have I had a nutmeg reaction?
This is also fortunately quite rare in that I avoid the usual suspects. Fortunately, in my case, I take some Benadryl and, shortly after, feel better.
Do you know anybody who has a nutmeg allergy?
