Baby Born To Mom Who Received Moderna Vaccine Has Covid-19 Antibodies

Covid-19 trials saw success this week as a baby born to a South Florida mom who received the Moderna Vaccine becomes the first infant to test positive for coronavirus antibodies, according to CBS News.

The pre-print study by Drs. Paul Gilbert and Chad Rudnick, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, notes the newborn’s cord blood was tested for SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies after the mother, who is a frontline worker, received one dose of the vaccine at 36 weeks into her pregnancy.

Ideally, the presence of the antibodies, which has also been found in moms who receive the Influenza and TDaP vaccines while pregnant, will continue to be present as more pregnant mothers are inoculated.

“This is one small case in what will be thousands and thousands of babies born to mothers who have been vaccinated over the next several months,” said Rudnick, according to Fox News.

In addition, the mother has received her second dose of the vaccine on schedule and has been breastfeeding exclusively, which passes on additional antibodies.

The study also notes that antibody levels after a vaccine were found to be lower than in mothers who were infected with Covid-19. This means infants born to vaccinated mothers may still be at risk for infection.

Since this result is an initial finding, and may not prove the efficacy of vaccine transference, the doctors behind the study encouraged their colleagues to “create pregnancy and breastfeeding registries as well as conduct efficacy and safety studies of the COVID-19 vaccines in pregnant and breastfeeding woman and their offspring.”
