How to be an influencer

It won’t have escaped your attention that the world has changed. Very dramatically, and very quickly.

Children and teenagers have changed too. If I ask an assembly of teenagers what they want to do when they leave school the top three answers are:

YouTuber

Professional gamer, and…

Influencer

Which is the perfect way for me to launch into the science of wellbeing and human flourishing because, after 25 years of hard graft, my PhD basically tells us that we’re all ‘influencers’. I’ll spare you the evolutionary psychology but human emotions are an open loop, so everyone is ‘catching’ how you feel. In fact, you cannot NOT be an influencer!

Rather than trotting out a whole list of ways that you can influence your children to be more positive, confident and resilient, here’s something much cleverer than that. It absolutely WILL help your children to be more positive, confident and resilient, but as a Motherhood Real Deal follower, I’m crediting you with bags of intelligence. You’ll be able to work out the meaning for yourself…

Is it a bird, is it a plane… nope, it’s an…

Everyday Superhero

They’re everywhere, but chances are you’ve never seen an Everyday Super because they’re cunningly disguised as ordinary people.

For example, your mum is an Everyday Super. She probably can’t lift cars, but she can lift you!

Dads – they might not be able to stop time but they can create time. The most precious time of all. The one-to-one, eye contact, genuinely being in the moment with their family time.

Next-door neighbours might not have x-ray vision but they can see when you need a hand. Their everyday superpowers are revealed by lending you their ladder.

Have you ever wondered why your besties are your besties?

They have the power of empathy. They tune in. They understand. It’s a wavelength thing. They are your cheerleaders (no pom-poms required).

All these Everyday Supers have one thing in common – a superpower of ironic proportions! Because, if you stop and think about it, while we all quite fancy the Marvel/DC superhero power of invisibility, it turns out that your Everyday Supers have the total opposite – the power of visibility

In a world of distraction, where everyone is glued to a screen and there’s a cat video buffering, ready to snaffle your attention – the power of simply being there for someone is quite a thing.

The superpower of presence is your gift to the world so why not join the ranks of the Everyday Supers. Embrace your viz-ability and avail-ability.
