House glow up ideas for your home exterior

Many of us are living in functional, family homes that were built between 1930s and 1990s. And there’s nothing wrong with that. But often these homes look a bit boxy and a little dated in style. As a result, you may have found yourself looking longingly at fancy new homes popping up in your area. Or taken to scrolling with envy through Instagram squares of chic-looking homes.

But if you’re happy with the location and space your current home offers, moving elsewhere could be a wrench. So, why not stay where you are and give your home a modern glow-up instead? Here’s a few of the ways you can do it.

Cover over the walls

Changing the Exterior walls will make a big impact on exactly how your home looks. Don’t worry, you don’t need to demolish anything just give them a new coat. And with so many new products available to do just that, it’s becoming easier and easier to achieve a modern-looking home.

The most popular solution is to render them. In general, House rendering costs range between £20 and £70 per square metre for acrylic and resin-based systems. This should get you a sleek white finish that looks very contemporary.

If you fancy adding a bit more character to your exterior, you could try mixing in sections of wood, composite or metal cladding to the façade. New interlocking weatherboard systems make this fairly simple to do but get an expert in to make sure it’s done properly.

Update windows and doors

It’s surprising just what a difference changing the windows and doors can make to your home’s exterior. So, updating basic or old uPVC versions for something a bit more stylish will certainly give your home a glow-up.

Casement windows in black aluminium are very on trend. And do look fab against white rendered walls, giving you an outstanding monochrome scheme. But there are plenty of other options such as flush casement windows which make the frames more discreet and maximise the glazing. And they come in a variety of contemporary colours.

If your windows are fairly new and you can’t face swapping them just yet, then uPVC paints can do a fab job of transforming boring white frames.

Whatever you do, make sure your doors match your windows in style and colour. Unfussy, minimalist styles in grey composite, oak or aluminium could work well but there are some great glazed designs out there too.

Restyle the garden

As well as the fabric of your home, a modern glow-up should extend to the Garden. So, get rid of the gnomes and crazy paving and start plotting your good-looking modern garden. Think decorative screening panels, architectural plants and minimalist planters.

With modern garden design, less is often more. For example, a geometric layout with multiple levels creates interest without needing to fill the garden full of high-maintenance flowers and naff ornaments. Seating can be blended into raised bed areas and vertical planting can soften the space without compromising the sense of space.

Keep a selective colour scheme too, with just two or three signature colours. For example, green, white and black. This can also help to make it more affordable to do. Coloured concrete, a few tins of paint and some leafy evergreens may be all you need to get the look.

Don’t ignore the details

A full modern glow-up of any exterior isn’t complete without taking care of the small details. At the front of the house, be sure to upgrade your outside lights, house number and door furniture to coordinate with the rest of your modern makeover.

Make it feel welcoming without creating too much clutter. Try clean-lined, matching planters either side of the door, with a neatly pruned tree or shrub in each. Or line a path with contemporary stake lights in black or brushed steel.

And smarten up guttering, downpipes and other functional features, so the house is looking its best. Fix anything that’s sagging or leaking and give everything a bit of a clean-up. Otherwise, it’ll let down your new and updated features.
