Simple at-home experiments for kids

Your children’s early years are a time they will look back on with fondness and a sense of nostalgia. During this time, everything your children learn is new, and they are excited about their discoveries which is why they love at-home experiments!

You might be tired of your children incessantly badgering you with questions on this and that, but children are naturally little adventurers, and they don’t mind getting down and dirty to find some new information. Encourage your child’s curiosity by conducting little at-home Experiments with them.

If your child is already something of a science geek who likes learning science games, they will enjoy these cool and easy science projects you and your child can easily do at home.

Tornado in a Bottle

This science project is a perfect explanation for your kids to understand the concept of weather. Follow these simple steps to conduct a simple vortex experiment with your children.

Things you’ll need:

  • 2 liter bottles,  empty
  • Duct tape
  • 1 metal washer
  • Tap water

How to do it:

  • Take one of the 2 liter bottles and fill it 2/3 with water.
  • Place the metal washer on the mouth of the bottle you have filled.
  • Pick up the second empty bottle and gently turn it over, placing the mouth of this bottle over the opening of the second bottle. This means that the metal washer now lies between the openings of the two bottles. Duct tape the two bottles together to hold them tightly in place.
  • Turn the bottle over and place it on a table. Turn the bottles in circles, much like the motion you make when stirring something in a pot. After some time, you will see a little twister – much like a tornado – form in the bottle.

Egg Drops

You don’t need to shop for anything to perform this experiment with your kids. Open your refrigerator and take out some eggs, and you’re all set. This science experiment will help your preschooler improve their problem-solving skills, and also work on their critical thinking.

Things you’ll need:

  • Eggs. If you don’t want to make a big mess, hard-boil the eggs before you start the experiment.
  • Toilet paper, small boxes, cotton wool, paper towel rolls; just anything that can act as a cushion for the eggs.

How to do it:

  • Select an egg with your child. You can let them have a bit of fun, and decorate the egg with colours and designs.
  • Use your cushioning objects to form a sort of protection for the egg when it’s dropped from a distance. You can pick any distance you want, but it’s best to keep it at about 2 feet for younger kids.
  • With the materials you have selected, form a cushioned container for the egg.
  • Drop the egg from the predetermined height. Countdown with your child, and drop the egg to see if it cracks. If it doesn’t crack, your child has successfully conducted an experiment! If it does crack, you can still enjoy your hard-boiled eggs and try again.

One great thing about the simple at-home experiments is that they are easy to do, and they allow your children flex their reasoning skills, observe events, and also create solutions to problems. An early love and fascination for science will improve your child’s curiosity as to why and how things work, and get them on a quest to find out more. Looking for more at-home experiments?
