The pros and cons of living in an apartment

Although some people prefer to live in an Apartment, others would rather live in their own houses. I have lived on  both houses and apartments in my life, and no matter what you choose, both of the options have their own pros and cons; you just have to choose the one that suits your lifestyle and tastes. If you are thinking about living in an apartment, here are the pros and cons of apartment living:

Pros

Amenities

Most apartment buildings offer a number of amenities, including playgrounds and gyms. If you choose to live in a private residence, you might not have access to such amenities. Moreover, some buildings have security 24/7, which means that you will be safe. Apartments are usually in close proximity to clubs, restaurants, and bars, making your life easier.

No maintenance

In most apartment buildings, maintenance is taken care of by the property owner. This means that you will not have to deal with those annoying repair costs. If you notice a leaky pipe or faulty outlets, all you have to do is call the property manager. You do not have to shovel snow during the winter or clean the communal space when living here.

Bills and Fees

In terms of heating and cooling costs as well as electricity and water, living in an apartment is much cheaper. When you live in a private residence, you have to pay for the utilities on your own but you will share the costs in an apartment.

Perfect for Living Alone

If you will be living alone for the near future, an apartment is great because you will have fewer bills and simplicity. The stress that comes with owning a home might be too much for you to handle alone.

Cons

Limited Space

When you are living in an apartment, you do not have the possibility of adding another room. The space that you see is the space that you will have to work with for as long as you are living in the apartment. This means that you have to show some creativity when decorating your tiny kitchen or bathroom. Although you can make a few changes such as removing the wall between the living area and balcony, you cannot do it without asking for permission. The limited space can also mean you feel on top of each other as a family.

Limited Privacy

You will not have much privacy in an apartment. You will be sharing walls with other tenants, which means that you have to keep the noise levels down if you do not want to be evicted. Moreover, you need to buy blinds or curtains if you do not want a neighbor from across the street spying on you.

Restrictions

When you choose to stay in an apartment, you have to consider some restrictions. For instance, you might be restricted from replacing the AC unit or painting the exterior of your apartment to maintain a uniform look throughout the complex. Moreover, most apartments are owned by body corporate, which means that the degree to which you can redo your apartment is limited.

Noise

Because apartment units are close together and share walls, you might overhear your neighbours shouting or singing at all hours of the day and night (and they might hear you screaming at the kids!). This means that you might end up suffering tensions with other tenants.

Parking

Unless you live in luxury apartments such as Altana Glendale, you might find yourself fighting over parking space with your neighbors.

Although apartment living is perfect for some, the notable disadvantages will make you want to consider living in a private residence. Just weigh the pros and cons carefully before making your decision.
