Buying your first Nonstick cookware set is one of the most exciting milestones in any foodie’s life. It means you can flip the perfect pancakes without the batter sticking to your pan, and cleanup is a breeze.

As easy to use as quality nonstick cookware sets are, ruining them can be just as effortless. The good news is, you can save your pots and pans and maintain them for longer with the following helpful tips.  

1. Nonstick Cooking Spray

Many people assume that they should use a Nonstick Cooking Spray with their nonstick pots and pans, but this type of cooking spray is actually not compatible with nonstick cookware.

That’s because, over time, nonstick cooking spray can cause greasy build-up on your cookware that’s impossible to remove.

The nonstick quality of the pan or pot means that you don’t have to use any nonstick cooking spray to ensure the food doesn’t stick to the pan. So, stay clear of any nonstick sprays, and use olive oil or butter instead. These have the added benefit of giving extra flavor to your food. 

2. Scrapping the Nonstick Coating Off

Did you know that the utensils you use are of vital importance when it comes to your nonstick pans? Metal spoons are the worst type of spoons to use on nonstick cookware.

For best results, always use wooden or silicone spoons and spatulas on your nonstick cookware sets. They’ll glide effortlessly without ruining the nonstick surface.

3. Incorrect Heat

When cooking with nonstick cookware, you’ll want to avoid high heat. Keep your stove set to medium or low heat to protect the nonstick quality of the pan. You should also avoid placing your nonstick pan in the oven as this might also damage it.

4. Sponge and Pot Scrapers

As convenient as it can be to use the rough side of the sponge to remove grease from your new pots and pans, it’s not the best idea as this could ruin your nonstick coating.

Only clean your nonstick pans with warm soapy water and the soft side of your sponge. Avoid using scrappers too as they can cause scratches. If you’re reluctant to use a sponge, then you can try microfiber towels instead.

5. Using Your Pots and Pans Correctly

While nonstick pans and pots are excellent for cooking, they are not ideal for storing leftover food overnight or even for a few hours. So, make sure to not leave your nonstick cookware sets soaking in water overnight. Instead, wash them immediately after use.

6. You Need to Cook Differently with Nonstick Cookware

The secret to getting it right with nonstick cookware is to switch up your cooking style. Instead of heating the butter or oil first and then putting your ingredients in the pan, place both the butter and ingredients in the pan at the same time. Then, turn on the heat and start cooking.

Making this one change can significantly improve your nonstick cookware’s lifespan, and it’ll be easier to clean and maintain.

 As with anything, do your best to look after your nonstick cookware sets. If you notice that your cookware is no longer as nonstick as it once was, or it looks as if it has seen better days, then you’ll do well to replace it with newer pots and pans. However, if it’s still relatively new, then you can keep your nonstick cookware in mint condition for longer by remembering to follow these tips.
