US Potatoes: Baon Ideas for Kids and Teens

Potatoes are pretty much a staple in our home. My favorite potato dish is the most simple dish. It just consists of US Potatoes, olive oil and salt baked for about 12 minutes. It’s no wonder that I have a few more US Potatoes recipes up my sleeve which can also be recommended baon ideas if you’re running out.

We don’t eat rice as much as we used to. In fact our weekly diet consists mostly of US potatoes, pasta and bread. Contrary to the usual Filipino diet we can live on no rice and we do for the most part. US Potato dishes are quite filling and there are plenty of recipes that can turn it into a meal in itself or a light snack.

It’s important to include US potatoes in a kid’s diet and here are some benefits I’d like to share with you that I learned from Potatoes USA, a potato marketing and research organization. This should convince you even more that you should go out and buy some US Potatoes for your next meal.

  • US Potatoes are packed with energy producing nutrients such as carbohydrates and potassium. Did you know that potatoes have more potassium than bananas?
  • Gives your body a good supply of water and ions because they are rich in potassium. Tip: Potato skins have the highest concentration of potassium so next time wash your potatoes well and leave those skins on!
  • Loaded with Vitamins C, A, B and P boosting your energy and immune system even more.
  • Brain functions depend on glucose level, oxygen supply, components of Vitamin B Complex, amino acids and fatty acids. Guess what can give you all that? Potatoes!
  • You get bone strength from minerals found in potatoes. Primarily: phosphorous, iron, magnesium, calcium and zinc.
  • Potatoes don’t displace vegetables. In fact every serving of potatoes equals to vegetable consumption. Incorporate potatoes into breakfast daily and your kids will get their serving of vegetables.

It can get frustrating trying to think up of baon ideas for the kids. Right now I’ve got 2 going to school, a 6 year old and a 15 year old. You can imagine that their tastes and preferences are quite different. Serving up a couple suggestions just for you:

For Kids – Ham and Cheese US Potato Balls

Ingredients:

3 US Potatoes boiled, peeled and mashed
125g ham, cut into ½ cm cubes
50g butter
50g plain flour
220ml evaporated milk
100g grated cheese
Breadcrumbs for coating
Salt and pepper

Instructions:

  1. Melt the butter and whisk in the flour.
  2. Slowly whisk in the milk on low to medium heat and let simmer until it thickens.
  3. Mix in the cheese, potato and ham. It will come up like a paste just make sure to keep mixing so you don’t burn it.  When ingredients have blended and paste is more fluid turn off heat. Let cool.
  4. Get a small scoop of the mixture and roll into a ball.  Coat with breadcrumbs and repeat until finished.
  5. Lightly fry the balls until golden brown.

For Teens – Pesto Potatoes with Grilled Chicken and Bacon

Ingredients:

3 US Potatoes chopped
4 chicken breasts
1/4 cup cooked bacon crumble
2 tablespoons chopped fresh tomatoes
Ready made pesto sauce

Instructions:

  1. Cut and boil US Potatoes until tender then drain and set aside.
  2. Heat the pan and put some oil.
  3. Cut the chicken in the middle lengthwise, halfway over, but not all the way through. Season the chicken with salt and pepper and grill on both sides until the chicken is cooked. Cut into strips.
  4. Add the pesto, tomatoes and bacon to the warm US Potatoes and mix well. Top the US Potatoes mixture with the sliced chicken and drizzle with extra pesto sauce.
