On Loving Single-Serve Coffee Pods and Loving the Environment

Thanks to Intelligent Blends for providing sample products and for being an amazing company that I’m happy to shop with, now. Affiliate links included. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Coffee (specifically iced coffee) is my absolute favorite drink on earth, and I crave it 2-3 times a day, 365 days/year. My husband thinks Coffee tastes like dirt, so I’m solo in my coffee consumption around here, which means that a single-serve brewer best meets my needs.

And if I’m being completely honest with you, I also think single-serve coffees just tastes better than making an entire pot. Perhaps that’s all in my head, but I don’t think so. The flavor just seems more concentrated, and that’s especially good since I have my own little method of brewing it over ice (which of course leads to some amount of dilution).

But the sheer volume of waste one produces with the daily use of coffee pods is sort of staggering. And for me, it really seems to fall outside of my professed values of trying to reign in the extent to which I use more than my fair share of resources in the world (a never-ending battle for folks in the Western world, I’m afraid).

Most of the time I use a reusable pod and grind my own beans. But to go back to a previous point, I can tell you that there’s a big difference in the flavor I get (and yes I’ve tried many different types of beans) vs. when I use an already prepared pod. My own stuff always comes out much weaker.

Such a strong idea in theory, but such a weak result in practice.

This is why I’m so excited to now know about Intelligent Blends. This company makes a wide variety of gourmet coffee and tea products in single-serve, RECYCLABLE pods.

Recycling the pods is very simple. The lid of the pod pulls off easily, the grounds inside can be dumped right into your compost or garbage, and then the filter can be pulled out quickly and easily and also discarded. The plastic pod then goes into your recycling bin. It takes me about 12 seconds to recycle this product.

I love that Intelligent Blends really seems to get it. There are many people out there who love, love, love their single-serve products, and who also love delicious blends that are fair trade and organic (Intelligent Blends is loaded with these options!), AND who don’t want their coffee love to turn into a big pile of trash for the generations to come.

It is estimated that over 20% of households in America now have a single-serve brewer in their homes. I’m so happy with this option I have found for fantastic, flavorful coffee with a recyclable pod with Intelligent Blends, a company that has sustainability at the heart of its mission. Each and every household that makes this switch will result in a very significant reduction in waste over time.
