Jigsaw Puzzles: A Good Fit

Nourish Parents,
Were jigsaw Puzzles a part of your childhood? Back when I was growing up, they were a favorite family acitivity, but nowadays, the television is taking over. Children don't benefit from sitting on the couch and watching cartoons, but they do benefit from learning skills like problem solving that puzzles teach you. We want you to bring back the puzzle in a big way and here is why.
1. Puzzles help develop a number of skills your child will need as they grow older, including fine motor skills by developing hand muscles.
2. Puzzles are also an important tool in developing hand-eye coordination.
3. Matching colors, sizes and shapes is key to undersanding spatial relationships and puzzles teach this skill even at a young age.
4. They also sharpen a child's ability to fit together multiple parts to make a whole and this skill can help with reading.
5. Children might also learn how to cope with frustration. The reward of completing the puzzle will help enhance their self-esteem.
When your child reaches 18 months of age, he or she will be ready for their first puzzle. The best types for toddlers have 4-13 pieces in a solid wooden tray because wood is easier for small hands to manipulate. These types of puzzles will also last you a long time and as they grow older, they might get easier, but learning how to do the same puzzle over and over to get the same result teaches them repetition. By the time your little ones are 4, they will be ready for 20-30 piece puzzles and when they are starting school, you can upgrade them to 25-100 pieces.
Puzzles open up a whole new world of problem solving, mystery and intrigue for your child and the best part about it is that they don't even know they are learning anything. A simple jigsaw can teach your little one so many different skills compared to a television that teaches them very little. Bring them back!
