Reading to Success

Nourish Family,
When we become parents, we want nothing more than for our babies to grow into smart, healthy and happy children. If you read our weekly blogs, you should have the healthy down. If you have visited our Pinterest page, your kiddos should be nothing but happy. But as for making your children smarter at any age, we have never really touched that point before. Luckily, the answer is quite simple.
Reading is the vehicle for so much knowledge, entertainment and skills that parents need to incorporate it as much as possible into every single day. Jenny Lewis of Modern Mom has a reading recipe for success that will help your little one become smarter no matter what their age.
1. Read TO your kids.
You should start reading to your infant in the first few weeks of their life. Even if it is as simple as a picture book, a babies' brain is stimulated by colors and shapes, so introducing that to them at an early age is important. Also, look for touchy-feely books when they become toddlers so they can experience different textures. Ex: Dr. Seuss, Where the Wild Things Are.
2. Read WITH your kids.
Especially when your kids enter preschool and kindergarten, reading with your kids while they are learning new words is very beneficial. Even though sounding out words is a great way to learn, it is also very helpful for your children to hear you read a book and follow along. This way, they can learn the flow of language and draw vivid pictures in their head to understand the plot.
3. Read IN FRONT OF your kids.
To encourage a love for reading, become a role model and make sure your little ones see you reading on a consistent basis. Whether it is the newspaper in the morning and a Kindle at night, nagging them to read will mean nothing if you don't do it as well.
