In 1986, he teamed up with another producer named Robert Wertheimer to produce Young Guns, starring Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland and Charlie Sheen. This film was an instant hit and made a lot of money, becoming one of the highest grossing films of the time.

The following year, Leland Sklar joined another renowned producer named Elliott Kastner to make a film about an eleven-year old who is diagnosed with cancer. This movie entitled The Buddy System had a relatively modest budget and earned more than $50 million at the box office.

Later in his life, Leland Sklar produced movies such as Liars (1990), The Secret of Roan Inish (1995) and Liar Liar (1997).
