Bookmobile Brings Summer Reading Program to Jersey City Recreation Locations

The Jersey City Free Public Library has announced a partnership with the Jersey City Department of Recreation to provide Summer reading and learning opportunities to youth at Summer Fun Day Camp sites throughout the city.

Beginning July 5, the Bookmobile will make scheduled weekly visits to Jersey City public school locations to give participants in the city’s Summer Fun Day Camp a chance to take part in the Library’s Summer Reading Program, a citywide program that provides weekday daytime activities for Children (grades K-5) and Young Adults (grades 6 and up).

“The Library is proud to partner with the Department of Recreation to provide children with reading and learning opportunities,” said Library Director Priscilla Gardner.

The Library’s Summer Reading Program is already underway, running till August 11, at the Main Library, all nine Library branches, and the Bookmobile. All programs are free and open to all Jersey City youth. Summer Fun Day Camp participants who are also registered for the Library Summer Reading Program will be able to take advantage of the many convenient Bookmobile stops to continue their summer reading activities. Youngsters can also register for the Summer Reading Program at the Bookmobile when it stops at the Summer Fun Day Camp locations.

The Recreation Summer Fun Day Camp runs from July 5 through August 4, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 3 pm at public school sites citywide. The program provides field trips, arts and crafts, sports, and other recreational activities to Jersey City youth ages seven to 13.

“The Summer Reading Program is designed to encourage children to explore and learn even when they are not in school,” Gardner added. “Because our Bookmobile makes the rounds of the whole city, we saw an excellent chance to reach more young readers at the citywide Summer Fun Day Camp, which is also providing an important service to Jersey City children during the summer months.”

In 2016, more than 900 children and young adults from across Jersey City participated in Summer Reading Program activities, reading a combined total of 8,601 books. The Jersey City Free Public Library anticipates even higher participation this year.

Summer Fun Day Camp sites where the Bookmobile will make regular stops include: M.S. #4; P.S. #6; M.S. #7; P.S. #11; P.S. #15; P.S. #22; P.S. #23; P.S. #27; P.S. #28; P.S. #39; M.S. #40, Lincoln High School, and Pershing Field.
