4 Things to Remember when Clothes Shopping with Teenagers

Raising an adventurous child is partly about putting up with some of the challenges that they throw at you, case in point: Shopping for Clothes. If you think buying outfits for yourself it’s hard enough, what about when you start taking your teenagers to the shops or they’ve come to you to take them out to learn their own style. Sometimes, taking our kids shopping means that we are not always going to approve of what they would like to wear, so let’s figure out how to be more mature in our clothes shopping with our teens.

Shop Online if You Can

Rather than dragging them around the shopping centres, it’s easier to find the right types of things for them online. If you’re looking for something like a Moncler polo shirt, you’ve probably got to rummage around physical stores to find the right one, but when you go online it makes everything so much easier. When you’re ordering things off the internet, it’s done and dusted pretty quickly, which will reduce our frustration, and they won’t feel particularly embarrassed about being seen in public with us.

Let Them Lead

It’s easy to be disapproving of every fashion choice our children make, but as teenagers, they are finding their way, and we’ve got to remember that as teenagers, we also spent a lot of time kicking against what our parents told us to do. You might be trying to help them, but if you start to disapprove of the things that they are wearing, ultimately it’s their choice. You can look back at pictures of yourself as a teenager and cringe, so let them make the same choices – maybe they will also cringe too in ten years time, and you can commiserate with them, or maybe they will still be happy about the way they looked. If there’s a number of things you can’t get your head around or you can’t make your peace with, it might be worth coming to a compromise where they choose a certain number of clothing items, and you choose the others. They will always need nice clothes as well, and so this can be a half-decent go-between.

Keep to a Budget

Of course, at the back of your mind, you will have a specific amount that you are willing to spend, especially as the cost of clothes has skyrocketed, but if they want anything and everything, you’ve got to come to some agreement and show them that you’ve got to stick to some budget. This will force them to go away and think about the clothes that they really want. This can save a lot of arguments in the store, or at home when you’re scouring the internet.

Bite Your Tongue

We can all feel it’s payback time when they criticise us or roll our eyes at the things we do. If you make disparaging comments every time they pull something off the clothes rail, this is going to cause arguments, and it will prolong the purchasing process! Do what you can, just stick it out, and make sure you don’t tut or roll your eyes!

What’s more, you’ve got to make peace with the fact that there are trends and maybe your child wishes to follow them however silly it may appear to you. It may go out of fashion in a year, but at the end of the day, you can put those clothes on eBay! When it comes to shopping for clothes with our teen, perhaps we need to grow up a little bit and pick our battles.
