How to get Crafting with Chiildren

Drag your kids away from those screens for half an hour or so each day and encourage them to get involved with Crafting. It’s the perfect way of creating time for the family to get together and do something productive, whether it’s making fun artwork for the fridge or getting messy with paints and ceramic pots.

Crafting with children can be a truly interactive experience that introduces kids to new sensory experiences. Playing with squishy clay to sculpt beads to turn into jewellery, or getting messy with papier-mâché  will introduce kids to different experiences and textures to test out. They’ll also discover what happens when the clay is popped in the oven and when the papier-mâché dries, so it’s great for younger Children who are just dipping their toes into the world of science.

If you’re not the best at crafting yourself, pick up kits from somewhere such as Homecraft craft supplies which feature all the tools and ‘ingredients’ you need as well as detailed instructions. Younger children will love creating paper flowers using tissue paper while older kids can grab their paintbrushes and create personalised designs on glass jewellery boxes and candle holders.

Quick, easy to complete projects will encourage children to get more involved with crafting; something that takes a long time to complete won’t encourage them to continue. Simple pottery painting or sculpting are among the best choices to start crafting with children, however if you want them to take on a longer project make it one you do together. This could be something such as creating decorations for the Christmas tree or putting together a selection of handmade cards for the wrapping drawer.

You could also try and make the crafting project appeal to them even more by picking up kits featuring their favourite characters from films and movies. There are plenty of Disney glass painting selections or Barbie jewellery making kits to get children involved with craftier activities.

Creating gifts is an easy way to inspire kids to get involved with crafting,

Creating gifts is an easy way to inspire kids to get involved with crafting, they’ll love seeing people open their DIY presents and saying they created them personally. Friendship bracelets, photo frames decorated with buttons or shells and handmade bookmarks are all perfect to wrap up for gift giving.

Seasonal crafts

Take advantage of seasonal crafts too. Plan in an Easter egg painting session ready to use for the Easter egg hunt, create some spooky spiders with pipe cleaners and googly eyes at Halloween or snow globes ready to decorate the house with at Christmas. Using the excuse of seasonal crafts is the perfect way of getting children to enjoy crafting, and hopefully inspiring them to love it.

Be proud of what they make – they are!

When it comes to getting kids involved with crafting it’s all about making it a fun activity and one that doesn’t restrict their creativity. Don’t get frustrated when they don’t follow the instructions properly or make a mess. Let them be kids, have fun together and always be proud of whatever they create.
