10 Ways to Make Sure Your Child’s Toys Are Safe

How to Make Sure Your Child’s Toys are Safe

Here’s 10 simple ways how you can make sure that your child enjoys his/her Toys while you take the appropriate steps to make sure they are safe.

1. Pay attention to the age recommendations on the package

This information is typically located in a corner or back of the box.

2. If the toy contains small parts, consider your child’s behavior before purchasing.

Even if he’s in the age range recommended by the manufacturer, you have to consider whether your child behaves mature enough to handle the toy.

3. Don’t let the child put the toy in his mouth.

If the child were to swallow any part of the toy, the results could be catastrophic.  If you see your child putting the toy in their mouth, remove it straightaway while saying “no” in a firm voice.  It’s not necessary to take the toys away from the child completely, but they need to be closely supervised.

4. Don’t leave your child without supervision when playing with a toy that has small parts.

Even if you step away for just a minute that could be all that it would take for your child to put the toy or part of it in his mouth.  This could be dangerous, so always provide as much supervision as possible while your child is playing with the toys and even more so if they contain small parts.  At the same time, don’t allow the child to run with any toys that have sharp edges.

5. Ensure that the toys are an authentic and not a cheap imitation, which may point to cheaper manufacturing.

When buying toys for your child, always make sure that you are getting what you pay for.

6. Check that any crayons and paints that you purchase are non-toxic.

The product label will show if the paints and markers have been tested and are proven to be non-toxic.  Look closely on the packaging in search of this seal before giving paints or crayons to the child.

7. If a toy is painted, make sure that the paint is not peeling off.

This is dangerous if the child were to put the toys in his mouth. Pay Attention to the toys your child plays with and check them regularly for chipping or peeling paint.

8. Check that the toys are fire retardant.

This is very important for the understandable reasons to protect the safety of your child.

9. Monitor the message and rating that a toy or a game is endorsing.

So many games and toys are promoting unhealthy messages or ideals.  It is important to monitor the toys that your child enjoys in order to make sure that the influences they are getting are age appropriate.

10. Pay attention to product recalls and consumer safety department warnings.

This type of information is important because it provides up-to-date information about products, along with any that have been recently found to have defects.  In the latter case, a product recall may be issued in order to avoid injuries.  Never allow a child to play with toys that have been recalled or are not deemed to be safe.
