Constipation in Babies: Causes and Cure

Constipation is an uncomfortable thing most of us experience. As a mum, it could be miserable to see your child cry because of constipation.

Though, it isn’t common in infants, your child might have infant constipation if he has infrequent and pellet-like bowel movements. Constipation might be caused by different factors.

Solid food. When you started giving your child solid food—it’s common that he’ll have mild constipation. It’s because solid food, like the common rice cereal, is low in fiber.

Formula. When your baby is not exclusively breastfed, there could possibly something in his formula that makes him constipated. What you can do is to check for the nutrients present in the formula. Dumex Dugro Step 2 has prebiotics to help maintain healthy digestive system and calcium, vitamin D3, iron, magnesium and zinc to support physical growth.

Dehydration. When dehydrated, the child’s system will absorb more fluid from whatever he eats or drinks—and also from the waste in his bowels which results to hard, dry stools that are difficult to pass.

Medical condition. It may be caused by an underlying medical condition such as hypothyroidism, botulism and certain food allergies.

So how can you make your child feel at ease when he’s having constipation?
  • Get some exercise. Encourage your child do a few laps if he’s a crawler, and try pumping his legs. Gently move her legs in a forward and circular motion when he’s lying back.
  • Massage the baby’s belly.
  • If formula-fed, ask the doctor about changing the brand. Check on the nutrients of the infant formula.
  • If he’s old enough to eat solid foods, cut down on foods like banana, and cooked carrots. Instead, try giving him few tablespoons of apricots and pears. This will help him loosen bowel movements.
