Screaming Child On The Plane.

The viral video of the poor child screaming on the Plane has been doing the rounds. It is every parents worst nightmare. I’ve  travelled many times with our twins over the last 15 months and it’s always been stressful.

While I have never had an incident as bad as this, I have had a brief brush with baby air rage. I had a similar experience with my 6 month old son who screamed the plane down for the 20 minute landing. Luckily, I was surrounded a compassionate elderly group of German ladies that felt my pain.

It was my own fault that Max cried as I did not give him a pacifier or bottle for landing to relieve the pressure in his little ears. That was one of the most stressful 20 minutes of my life but I survived. The mother in the video must have felt terrible to endure such stress for a long haul flight

In this video the child is dealing with issues that we are unaware of, it may be psychological or it could be physical. Either way, to judge the parents and the child based on him reacting to being confined in a tight space for a long period of time is not right.

There needs to be more understanding and sympathy in these situations. Yes, it’s inconvenient for the other passengers but the poor family are suffering considerably more. In this situation all you want to do is get off the plane.

The video is hard to watch for parents. It’s even harder to read some of the vitriolic comments. Some said that the parents and child should be beaten. Others said the parents should be arrested. There are some other nasty comments that I won’t give any air time because they are so distasteful.  

Do not judge people unless you’ve walked a mile in their shoes. It’s very difficult to travel with children especially if the child has special needs. Next time you’re on a flight and a child is crying try to be a bit more compassionate.

Don’t prejudge the child or his parents, you don’t know how difficult their life has been. Maybe the child is claustrophobic, maybe his grandparents just died, maybe his father just went to prison, maybe he has autism, maybe he suffered a traumatic brain injury, maybe his mother suffers from depression or a degenerative disease….. You just don’t know and you can’t just judge based on what you see in this small window of time.

People need to be sympathetic and understanding for all parents and children passengers. Raising children is a very tough job and travelling with them is one of the most stressful times for any parent. Next time you see some family suffering don’t take a video offer to help.
