Clean souls and dirty boots

And so it goes, that it’s time to prepare the field for our first garden! And we want everyone involved wherever they can be. To be able to talk about God’s creation and play in the dirt in the process. That leaves us with clean souls and dirty boots!

We start with a beautiful plot of green land and soon realize that this lush green must be cut. Boy child and girl child are getting old enough and strong enough to help us with this part. That’s some great help we hadn’t thought that we would have but boy will we take it!

Both kids really wanted to use the lawn Mower so Dad gave a quick lesson in how the mower works and how to use it. They talked about the choke and the lever that helps the front wheels engage. How when you let go of the handle, the whole thing shuts off. And how you have to give the rope a real good yank to bring the beast to life!

So, boy child did the honors of pulling the choke latch and then Dad got the mower going. Next was a quick pass down and back to give a good, clear line for the kids to follow. Boy child went first and it was time for muscles because this land wasn’t smooth and there was only so much that the self-propelled mower could help with!

He did great! Boy was he pushing and huffing. It took his whole body weight to keep the mower going across the field and he got stuck a few times, but overall he kept it going. He stayed on his lines, too.

After a pass down and back, he was ready for a break, which was good because girl child was ready for her turn! She had some of the same troubles, but also did really good pushing that mower on her swipe down and back.

Dad saw that the kids were getting the hang of things. So he went to get the tiller ready for his part of garden prep. Boy and girl child each took turns going down and back. One handed the mower off then took a break while the other took a turn. They got the hang of keeping the mower moving, which helped them from getting stuck.

I’ll tell you there’s no better sight than seeing the two of them cheer each other on as each kid made a pass down and back. And even better, seeing them help each other get their passes started by using all their body weight together to get the mower going.

Boy, they sure did love helping to get this garden going. Dad tilled and they watched the green field turn brown with rich soil (and a few garden snakes, which weren’t harmed!). Now we wait for another tilling round and while we wait, we’re going to get our garden started inside.

Stay tuned…we’ve got a garden nursery to work on and we’ve still got our chicken situation to figure out! So much fun to turn our new place into a little farm…with our clean souls and dirty boots.
