Crazy Sock Night

Recently, our children had a “crazy Sock night” at their Wednesday night activities at church. This fun night coincided with us moving, so we were completed prepared. We were not at all caught off guard by the need to obtain socks that qualify in the “crazy” category. You’d think this would be an easy thing to find. It was not. I looked and looked and nothing seemed crazy.

I Pinterested. What do crazy socks for a “crazy sock night” look like, anyway? Oh my. I found all sorts of off the chart craziness that made me realize I was missing the point of this evening completely! This was an opportunity to create. And opportunity for me to give this situation back to my kids so they could create. And that’s just what I did! Now, we were short on time so we couldn’t go overboard in creativity but we got it done.

I bought a 10-pack of white athletic socks that go up the leg (you know, for ample canvas space) and a set of fabric markers. Now, fair warning…the fabric markers were a little more expensive than I was expecting, but not too bad. Since a blank canvas sometimes stumps the kids’ creativity, I decided to make an example for inspiration. I’m not going to claim complete independence on this drawing idea as this was also on Pinterest. But I did draw and color it myself.

Here’s my example- it’s an Ode to Summer:

That’s right…what’s more Summer-y than watermelon and lemonade?!

This example (I’m glad I did this for them) was all it took for them to find their own ideas and get going. I have three littles so having a 10-pack of socks was perfect in case someone messed up or drew something too crass for church! I’m just saying…one of my kids is a boy and he’s never one to shy away from drawing a pile of poop if the mood strikes him!

So, after some thinking and a little creativity, here’s what the kiddos came up with:

One went a little religious, one went a little lucky and one managed to draw a pretty darn good tree frog against the grain of a tube sock! All in all, this was a great impromptu craft session and they self-served on the crazy sock night solution. Win-win if you ask me!
