In fact, it is the right firmness for a newborn baby but the thing is - this mattress pad is not waterproof.
Sure, the cotton slipcover sheet that is provided is washable but if there is bigger spills or messes, it may sip right through it and a non-waterproof mattress pad may not be that ideal in the long run.
That is the only thing we have to 'complain' but at this price point and with all its other features, we are very happy with the Green Frog nonetheless.
If it really bothers you a lot though, you can always buy another mattress - this is a good one - as another good thing about this rocker bassinet is that any standard-sized mattress is a good fit.
