4 Ways to Save Money While Homeschooling

If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s the fact that we’d love to save money while homeschooling. If you’re homeschooling multiple kids, this is even more necessary. In this post, I’ll share my best tips for saving money on your homeschooling journey.

4 Ways to Save Money While Homeschooling

Use Local Resources

Local public libraries are one of the most overlooked resources when it comes to homeschooling. Beyond checking out free books, most libraries offer programs and services for children of different age groups. From weekly storytimes to summer reading challenges, check with your public library to see what they have available.

If you live in a town with a larger library, they may host homeschool-specific programs, have educational kits, or have learning units available to rent. There are also local organizations and businesses that offer resources and/or programs that can work for homeschooling.

Buy Used or Like-New Resources

One quick Facebook group search and you’ll find tons of used and like-new curriculum for sale groups. These are moms (and dads) who are looking to sell their curriculum or in some cases make an exchange for another kind. These groups also provide a wealth of information and reviews about any and every curriculum you can think of. This comes in handy when deciding if a certain resource is a good choice for you and your family.

When you find something you need or want, the process of buying is usually pretty simple. You’ll exchange your information with the seller, pay via a trusted platform (you can pay directly through Facebook now), and your resources will be shipped. Easy peasy!

Use Your Educator Discount

Did you know as a homeschooling parent, you can claim the same discounts as a teacher? For physical locations, typically all you’ll need is a card of some sort that shows you’re homeschooling. Most parents work something up on their computer with their homeschool name, legal name, and homeschool year. Laminate it and you’re done!

There are many online places that offer discounts for homeschoolers, such as:

  • homeschool buyers co-op
  • StartWrite
  • Adobe
  • Microsoft
  • Office Depot
  • Tutor.com
  • The Container Store
  • and more!

Make sure to ask the checkout clerk if they give educator discounts as they’re not always posted where you can see. Before checking out online, look for coupon codes for homeschoolers.

Look for Free Resources

One quick Google search for free homeschooling resources and you’ll instantly get billions of hits. The key is to be as specific as possible with your search so you can find exactly what you’re looking for. Digital homeschooling resources have been on the rise in recent years so finding them isn’t difficult. It’s a matter of finding what you’re looking for and saving them to your computer.

Also, keep in mind that homeschooling isn’t always about physical resources. Learning can take place on a daily basis with something as simple as a trip to the grocery store or doing chores. Look for opportunities to learn at the park, on field trips, or while driving down the road!

Final Thoughts

As you head into the next homeschool year (and beyond), use these practical tips to help you save money. As homeschooling grows in popularity, I suspect there will be even more ways to save!
