5 Ways to Make Teaching Literacy More Fun
Check their prior knowledge.
If you’re like me, I get stuck on the lesson plan at hand and can often go “by the book.” This is all fine and dandy, but sometimes it’s worth stopping and asking your kids, “What do you already know about this story?” It may surprise you to learn that they may already know quite a bit. This will help nip any boredom in the bud and tweak lessons accordingly.
Use a book reading tracker.
Ever since bullet journaling became a popular thing, keeping a tracker for every part of life has become a thing, too. Lucky for us homeschooling moms, these make the perfect addition to helping our kids keep track of what they’re doing, and in a fun way. Consider using a book reading tracker that your kids can color and decorate for each time they have successfully completed a book.
Let them be creative.
In my Print-and-Go Literacy Journal, I created a few templates to allow my kids (and yours) creatively show and tell about the book they’re reading. There is space for writing down important parts, as well as a section for illustrating their retold version of the story. This will help you see how much they know and retained, all while giving them creative liberty.
Provide different ways to learn.
Every child has their own unique learning style and trying to accommodate that can be overwhelming at times. If your kid prefers to draw, let them draw most of their assignments. If they like to write, let them write. Sometimes dictation (and you writing for them) will suffice. Overall, you’ll want to meet your child where they are and go where their needs lead.
Point out a job well done.
A little encouragement and recognition can go a long way. It’s easy to have the mindset of, “This is what’s expected of you, so you should be able to do it.”; however, everything our kids are learning is brand new to them at some point. It’d be nice if they were born with a few “I already know how’s,” but that isn’t reality. The truth of the matter is, our kids need to know that we are proud of them and they need to be acknowledged for jobs well done.
