5 Kid-Friendly Recipes to Teach Your Kids This Winter

When it comes to winter time, kid-friendly recipes can save the day! Depending on the where you live, some winter weather can have you spending more time inside than out. And if the same is true for your home, more time spent inside means more time spent in the kitchen. Instead of staying clear of the snacks, use these recipes to give your kids something to do and teach valuable lessons in the process!

You’ll find these recipes appropriate for kids of all ages; however, make sure your younger ones are monitored at all times. Be mindful of any ingredients that may need to be swapped out, but overall, let your kids have some fun in the kitchen!

Homemade Hot Cocoa

Say goodbye to the store-bought cocoa mix and hello to this kid-friendly recipe that only takes four ingredients. Not to mentions, it’s a great way to save at home! All you need is:

  • 1 ½ cups unsweetened cocoa
  • 3 ½ cups granulated sugar, divided
  • 6 ounces semisweet chocolate chips
  • 4 cups milk (1 cup per serving)

To make it place the cocoa, sugar, and Chocolate Chips into a food processor with the blade attachment and process until smooth. This can be stored in an airtight container for up to six months!

When your kiddos are ready for a cup, scoop 3 tablespoons of the hot cocoa mix into a microwave-safe mug. Add 1 cup of milk, and stir to combine. Microwave on high 1 ½ to 2 minutes or until blended and hot, stirring once.

Peanut Butter, Banana, and Chocolate Chip Sandwich

This recipe puts a new twist on peanut butter and banana sandwiches by adding a handful of chocolate chips. For this recipe, you’ll need:

  • 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons miniature semisweet chocolate chips
  • 4 slices whole wheat bread
  • 1 medium banana, thinly sliced

To make this yummy treat, mix the peanut butter, honey and cinnamon together. Stir in chocolate chips. Then, spread the mixture over one slice of bread. Layer with banana slices and top with the remaining piece of bread.

Kid-Crunch Mix

This is one of the most adored kid-friendly recipes out there. The animal crackers and M&Ms may have something to do with, but here’s the full ingredient list:

  • 1 cup plain or frosted animal crackers
  • 1 cup bear-shaped crackers
  • 1 cup miniature pretzels
  • 1 cup salted peanuts
  • 1 cup M&M’s
  • 1 cup yogurt- or chocolate-covered raisins

To make this super simple recipe, your kids will simply combine all ingredients in a bowl and store in an airtight container. Feel free to substitute any of the ingredients for things you already have in the kitchen.

Crunchy Granola Pretzel Sticks

Kids young and old (including you, mom) will enjoy this tasty treat. It’s nutritional and yummy at the same time. All you need is just three ingredients:

  • 1 package (12 ounces) dark chocolate chips
  • 24 pretzel rods
  • 1 cup granola without raisins

To make, melt the chocolate chips in a 2-cup glass measuring cup in the microwave (or double broiler if you prefer). Stir until smooth. Pour the chocolate into one side of a large shallow dish. Roll each pretzel halfway into chocolate. Allow the excess coating to drip off, then sprinkle pretzels with granola. Place on waxed paper until dried. Enjoy! Store any leftovers in an airtight container.

Honey & Yogurt Fruit Cups

If there’s one kid-friendly recipe that promotes healthy eating, this is it. Filled with lots of fruit and a sweet touch of honey, your kids will love it. Gather:

  • 4-1/2 cups cut-up fresh fruit (pears, apples, bananas, grapes, etc.)
  • 3/4 cup mandarin orange, vanilla or lemon yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated orange zest
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract

Divide the fruit among 6 individual serving bowls (or cups). Combine the yogurt, honey, orange zest and extract. Then, spoon over the fruit.
