Right from grandparents to friends to family, new moms are flooded with advice on parenting. But how sure are you about the accuracy? Despite many campaigns and awareness programs on how to put babies on their backs to sleep – not all moms follow it.

Most newborns seem to prefer Sleeping on their tummy and are less likely to wake themselves up. This might be because the baby feels more secure and cozy snuggling up against the mattress. Unfortunately, as restful as it is, sleeping on the tummy isn’t safe. Here’s why your baby should sleep on his back.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends infants be placed supine for sleep. But according to a recent study, only 43.7% of US mothers reported that they intended to place their infants exclusively supine.

The Safe to Sleep campaign recommends moms to place their babies on the back while sleeping since 1994. Placing them on supine position reduces the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) as well as other sleep-related infant deaths, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. Eve Colson, professor of pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine and co-author of the study said, “What was new and hadn’t been explored before was this idea of what people intended to do versus what they actually do. What we found was that people intended to put their baby on their back but didn’t always do that.”

Dr. Robin Jacobson, a pediatrician at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone Health, who was not involved in the study said, “Grandmothers and aunts and everybody have told (mothers) if they have babies sleep on their bellies, they’re more comfortable; they’re not going to choke. And because of that, a new mom who doesn’t really have a lot of information is using information from everybody else in their life.”
