THIS is the secret to raising smart kids! (P.S. – Fathers, take note!)

Tags: baby face brain

For many fathers spending time with their Baby is challenged by work commitments, erotic work hours and of course the stress and tension that comes with all of this. But it turns out that fathers play an enormous role in raising a smart kid.

Fathers make a great difference in a child’s life, probably a little more than the over hyped mother-child bond. While some intellectual prowess is genetic, raising smart kids also has much to do with fathers spending quality time with their babies.

So, daddies, it’s not always the mom’s job to ensure she’s parenting right. Doing these with your babies can strengthen your bond and also make your baby smart!

1. Cuddling

Cuddling is not just for moms! Fathers can do it and it can be as beneficial to babies. Cuddling your baby increases the production of oxytocin hormone, which is the happy hormone and will instantly cheer your baby. Also, studies reveal that children who receive more cuddles have bigger brains. Feels good to know? Yes, it’s true! Hugging or cuddling might not raise their IQ, but it sure will provide your kid a safe and secure environment to grow, which will in turn directly affect their overall development.

2. Talk to your baby

Thought your baby might not understand a word of what you are saying? You are completely wrong! Research reveals that the brain is a pattern-seeking organ and the more it hears the patterns of language, the easier language learning becomes. So, go on and narrate your day to your baby, once you are back from work. Use expressive words like red car, strong coffee, dirty truck etc to spice up the vocabulary.

Also, watch your tone. High pitch, low pitch, and exaggerated vowels can all help your baby’s brain learn the language faster because each vowel sounds more distinct. So, let the babbling begin!

3. Invest in face time

Feel like making funny faces at your baby? Go for it! Studies suggest that Face to face interaction helps in brain development. Infants begin to recognise their parents’ faces by 3-4 months and by the time they are 7-9 months, they can distinguish dogs and monkeys face too. Being able to read facial expression is the key to non-verbal communication, team work, goal settings, and also long term relationships.

However, make sure you don’t overdo it or your baby is sure to get over stimulated. Signs of over stimulation include the baby looking away, crying, cranky etc.  Remember, the brain needs breaks!

4. Point your finger

Although your baby might not understand what you are saying, pointing at objects, things or people you are talking about will help them follow better. At first, your baby might only look at you, even if you are pointing at something but as he grows a bit older, he will gradually start following your hand. This helps to promote social, cognitive and language development.

5. Music

Studies suggest that music can help improve your baby’s attention span and boost his memory. Also introducing your baby to an instrument will develop his thinking ability, reasoning, and aptitude.
