Roamin’ in the Wilds: What is in Iceland

Iceland, with its small population, seems like a great place to visit. With its many stories of supernatural Creatures and varied landscapes, it is sure to be a place you won’t want to leave. Here are just a few of the creatures said to roam the countryside.

Lagarfljót worm or Iceland Worm Monster is a creature said to live in Lagarfljót lake, Egilsstaoir, Iceland. This serpentine creature has been spotted at least since 1345. It lives in its freshwater home but has been spotted out of the water, coiled up or slithering into the trees. It is said to be about 39 feet long. (Don’t think I want to fish there) Skeptics have tried to debunk this one, but not all the sightings can be ruled out as something normal.

Huldufólk or hidden people, are said to be tall and handsome entities with black hair and clothes of all grey. (I’m guessing they are trying to blend in with the surroundings maybe) They live in mounds and despite being tall, they are also known as elves. They are said to be mischievous creatures and they possess magical powers, but they can be made to help you if you outsmart them. (Good luck trying to do that) The Huldufólk don’t like crosses, churches or electricity. They can be angered if disrespected, so treat them well.

Álfar are another of the “hidden people” that are said to make their home in Iceland. While they are Elves, they are described as rather strange creatures with spindly legs and oddly proportioned features. (They should be pretty easy to spot)

Trolls are some big brutish creatures that live in caves and other dark places in Iceland among other places of the world. They are said to be very strong so watch your self. If you stay in the sunshine they can’t hurt you as they will be turned to stone if the daylight hits them. (If you come across one, you can test this out and let us know what happens) Though intimidating, they can be decent at times, returning a favor for a favor on those that treat them well.

Hrosshvalur, a horse/whale combination, lives in the seas around Iceland. It has a red mane for some reason. (Maybe to scare people if the see it coming) It is said to beat its tail on the surface to create waves to overwhelm boats and try to drown seafarers. It also sounds like a horse with a “neigh” sound. (Yeah it sounds pretty freaky, doesn’t it)

Fjörulalli – a fat, woolly seal looking creature that is a land dweller and a vegetarian that prowls the beaches and coves of the West Fjords. (Vegetarian seems just a bit odd. you don’t hear that much when talking about creatures) They seem to have a weird fascination with pregnant ladies. They are also said to impregnate unlucky sheep.

Despite all of the different creatures roaming the countryside, Iceland looks to be a very beautiful place. I hope to one day see it for myself and hopefully some of the myths and legends will appear.
