The Loveland Frog

North America is home to many famous cryptids known worldwide such as Bigfoot, Chupacabra, and Ogopogo.  Yet there are many other creatures few are unaware of only to exist as local lore until the development of the internet.  Over the next few months, I’ll be writing a series of articles about these cryptids.  The first to be introduced is the Loveland Frogman.

The small town of Loveland Ohio is home to the legendary creature.  The first recorded encounter with the Loveland Frog was in May, 1955 by an unnamed business man.  In his account, while driving he witnessed three strange bipedal reptilians off to the side of the road.  He stopped to watch them for several moments.  The business man described the creatures 3 to 4 feet tall with webbed hands and feet and their skin was leathery.  He swears the most distinguishing feature about them was their frog like heads.

In March 1972, a local police office was traveling slowly down an icy road and spotted what believed to be a dog along the road.  The creature darted in front of the cruiser causing the officer to stop. In the headlights, he seen the animal was not a dog but what he described as a couching frog. The creature then stood up on two legs, briefly stared at the office then leaped off into the Ohio River. Upon further description given, the cryptid was 3 to 4 tall with leather skin.

In researching for any earlier sightings, I came across an old native legend about the Shawnahooc. This creature, accord to the lore, is a demon that inhabits the Little Miami River by Loveland, Ohio.  The Shawnahooc is described as a large reptile that walks on two legs and once terrorized local native tribes. In an ancient battle the creature was defeated but went into hiding.  Some would believed the Loveland Frog to be the return of the Shawnahooc.
