Yellow Top or The Precambrian Shield Man

Yellow Top or The Precambrian Shield Man

In 1906, a group of men building the headframe of the Violet Mine east of Cobalt, Ontario reported seeing a hairy apelike creature, black in color with a yellow patch or mane on its head. The legend of Yellow Top was born.

The next reported sighting of this remarkable creature was July 27, 1923. Mr. J.A. MacAuley and Mr. Lorne Wilson were out working their claims. These lay north and east of the Wettlaufer Mine near Cobalt. As they were taking their test samples, they both noticed a bear picking blueberries in a nearby patch. Mr. Wilson picked up a stone and threw it at the bear.

"It kind of stood up and growled at us. Then it ran away. It sure was like no bear that I have ever seen. Its head was kind of yellow and the rest of it was black, like a bear, all covered with hair."
A woman and her son had the next reported sighting on April 16, 1946. While they were walking to Cobalt using the tracks for their path, the woman saw the Creature wandering off the tracks and into the bushes. She did not get a clear look at the creature but said it walked almost like a man. This was near Gillies Lake at Gillies Depot.

Then in 1970, twenty-seven miners working the graveyard shift for the Cobalt Lode were riding a bus driven by Amos Latreille when it suddenly swerved and stopped short of wrecking down a cliff. The driver claimed to have been startled by a dark form that walked across the road in front of the bus.

"At first I thought it was a big bear. But then it turned to face the headlights and I could see some light hair, almost down to its shoulders. It couldn't have been a bear." said Latreille.

Latreille had been driving the bus for around four months but stated he was not sure he would be able to continue to do so. "I have heard of this thing before but never believed it. Now I am sure," said Latreille.

Miner Larry Cormack was sitting in the front of the bus and caught a quick look. He said, "It looked like a bear to me at first, but it didn't walk like one. It was kind of half stooped over. Maybe it was a wounded bear. I don't know." He then said he didn't believe the pre-Cambrian shield man actually existed before the accident. "My father used to talk about it, but I've seen it close up."

There were also a couple of other suspect reports of a strange hairy creature scaring bus passengers in the area. The creature is said to hide in the bushes and jump up, brandishing a club in the air.

Theory One: It is a pre-Cambrian man routed by visitors from a long-lost cave.
Theory Two "He is a "reveller" from the saloon.

These last two bus scare stories sound like hoaxes, tricks being played, and playing on the miners' bus crash. In any case, none of the original reports made ever involved clubs or had a long-lost cave included.

A word about the Pre-Cambrian era before someone thinks this is a theory for bigfoot to be explored. Pre-Cambrian is a term used by some geologists and paleontologists for general purposes to refer to the time period when the earth was first formed instead of referring to the divisional breakdowns of the long time period of the earth's development. The only known creatures of this time were single-cell organisms, microscopic bacteria, and then eventually soft-bodied creatures and then hard-shelled. The land was pretty much thought to be devoid of plant and animal life. So, probably no bigfoot roaming the earth above or below ground.

These reports are not to be confused with the stories and video from Colorado in 2009 allegedly showing a bigfoot with a yellow head. That's another story.
