WordCamp Colombo 2017 in Nutshell

Ayubowan! We are back from Colombo (Sri Lanka) and it’d been an exhilarating experience.

Yes, you got it right! It was another WordCamp, attended and sponsored by Multidots. Though it was not the first time we’re attending the WordCamp, neither the last, but Colombo was an exciting destination to be at. So, we were as overjoyed as the graduates getting selected to join a company.

After visiting WordCamp Colombo 2017, it’s the time to collect the nitty-gritty of what we’ve learned and done; and thereby sharing with you:

WC Colombo Sponsorship is something to take pride of!

Our obsessive love for WordPress keeps us heartily connected to the WordCamp’s organizing team. We are always enthusiastic about sponsoring this amazing event as it helps us in greeting new opportunities.

Colombo – Day 1

Temples, Museum, and a Get-Together

From Ahmedabad to Chennai to Colombo, we reached Bandaranaike International Airport at 3 AM. After visiting multiple temples and museum, it’s the time for the real fun to get started. In the get-together organized at Flavoured Restaurant in the Cinnamon Red Colombo, we met the attendees, speakers, sponsors, and organizers

Sessions at WordCamp, Colombo

Around at 8:45, we were there at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH). Team Multidots got registered for the WC and took the path to hallway… After some tea and coffee, lectures began at 9:30 a.m.

Here’s the crux of every session our team attended:

‘Using WordPress as a Mobile Backend’ by Himash Tehan

Mobile is the future and we all know that. Himash is an app developer and he gave us enough insights about how to use WP for mobile projects.

What we learnt –

Incorporating the WordPress and utilizing its potential for both hybrid and native mobile technologies is definitely needed. All the apps need remote databases and WordPress REST API has the power to serve this requirement and become the mobile backend for the mobile app development projects.

Whoa, that’s pretty cool, right?

‘Selling WordPress to Enterprises’ by Rahul Bansal

Rahul’s explanation about how to think as consultants when you’re selling WordPress to enterprises was captivating. It’s quite a point to observe, that even enterprises can adopt the WP for good. With this, we’ll be focusing more to convert the enterprises into our buyers for WordPress projects too.

Samantha Pathirathna talked about ‘WP for Sustainable Development’

That was an off-beat discussion. We were talking on how to utilize the WordPress’s potential to help in sustainable development. Overall, the session was interesting and could be helpful in letting us contribute in increasing earth’s life. Fascinating, no?

Karen’s Session on Bridging the Developer-Customer Gap

Working at Automattic for years, Karen Arnold is an experienced speaker, who hires the working staff for Automattic’s products since 5 years or more.

Her focus was on how important it is to provide good support, once a plugin or any WP product is ready and launched. Her in-depth session helped us think about how we can earn a good reputation and ensure a higher level of customer satisfaction.

After Dwain Maralack’s talk on how the WordPress helped him evolve, ‘Designing Thinking’ Lecture was the next…

‘Hardening WordPress’ is the need of time

Chathu Vishwajith was now on the stage for the pre-planned session “Hardening WordPress is an art”. He is proficient in handling DDoS attacks on WP sites, creating WP sites and custom plugins. In Colombo’s insightful session, he explained about the need of safeguarding the WordPress sites in a better way, controlling the plugins, reducing the vulnerabilities, and more.

Going over, the hackers’ attacks and current condition was also the part of his talk. Team Multidots loved the overall session as it was an excellent security initiative and our priorities are also the same.

And then…

We’ve got the chance to hear the Person Behind Contact form7

The icing on cake! It was Takayuki Miyoshi, the developer behind one of the most-used WP Plugin Contact Form 7. There was a lot to learn from his 10 years of Plugin development experience and we didn’t want to miss any point.

Overall – there were nine lectures in the English language, a panel discussion, and two lectures in the local language, Tamil, throughout the day. During a roundtable, it was revealed that 85% of attendees were presented out of total registrations.

After taking all the notes and hearing the closing remarks, it was the time to leave.

After party

At 6’o clock, we left the venue for after party. The sunset was much astonishing and the weather looked superb from the rooftop bus. Our after party was arranged at the Mount Lavinia Hotel. The traditional Sri Lankan fire dance was awesome to watch.

Speakers together –

Wait, where are you going? WC Ahmedabad is on its way and we are the Organizers!

You heard it right, Multidots is going to organize the WordCamp Ahmedabad. The event is scheduled in October from 6th to 8th, where M Asif Rahman is one of the speakers.

Though it goes without saying, just to make our point clear; we’d to say – You all are invited to join us at Ahmedabad WordCamp, which is going to be a perfect learning feast.

So see you soon at Ahmedabad
