USA researchers did a Double Blind Placebo test with Hydroxychloroquine a 70 year old antimalarial generic drug that has been used by millions.

The results of 30 people with COVID 19 is of 15 on placebo 0% were cured, of 15 on Hydroxychloroquine 100% were cured and no longer would infect others. It costs .70 pill in USA, .04 a pill overseas and the recommended treatment is 1 pill for 7-10 days so entire treatment is $0.40.

This is wonderful news for poor countries. It is an extremely common drug produced in high quantities. It does have side effects but they are much more likely after years of use, for 7-10 days drug interactions would be the main concern. My sister used it several times for travel to tropical areas and recalls no side effects.

This is what is being used in Korea which has a death rate 1/10th of Italy which does not appears to use it as the std treatment. As the study above notes it has a vaccine like Prophylactic effect too. They sum up why they think it works here: To summarize, because chloroquine has a multitude of extra nitrogens, once it crosses the membrane and enters an organelle, the organelle is prevented from reaching a lower pH. The organelle’s enzymes cannot work because the donor group will be a hydrogen ion, disabling the hydrolysis required for coronavirus replication. This means that all kinds of events in the cell are incapable of performing optimally, including viral replication.

According to the Korea Biomedical Review, the South Korean COVID-19 Central Clinical Task Force guidelines are as follows:

1.        If patients are young, healthy, and have mild symptoms without underlying conditions, doctors can observe them without antiviral treatment;

2.        If more than 10 days have passed since the onset of the illness and the symptoms are mild, physicians do not have to start an antiviral medication;

3.        However, if patients are old or have underlying conditions with serious symptoms, physicians should consider an antiviral treatment. If they decide to use the antiviral therapy, they should start the administration as soon as possible:

… chloroquine 500mg orally per day.

4.        As chloroquine is not available in Korea, doctors could consider hydroxychloroquine 400mg orally per day (Hydroxychloroquine is an analog of chloroquine used against malaria, autoimmune disorders, etc.  It is widely available as well).

5. The treatment is suitable for 7-10 days, which can be shortened or extended depending on clinical progress.

Notably, the guidelines mention other antivirals as further lines of defense, including anti-HIV drugs.

Note the person on TV interview in first link says hydroxychloroquine is safer to use than chloroquine, but both will work.

In terms of how it works another doctor with a COVID patient in USA that wanted to figure out why Korea has a 10 times better treatment success rate than Italy. So this is being used in Korea and now is being used in China too, both are having success with it.

The French government tasked a famed scientist to come up with a cure for COVID. He did another test like USA one on 28 french patients with COVID. Even though it is the most successful treatment used so far. It appears to have saved hundreds if not thousands of lives in Korea.

In summation in my opinion the very best results seem to be with hydroxychloroquine. In a double blind placebo test in USA it was 100% effective in 6 days, and is one of the least expensive drugs in the world used by millions over decades. It does require a prescription in USA and doctors can prescribe it and are.
