Mind it! It’s the brain story

Do you know your Brain is one of the most unique, complex and fascinating elements in the world? It’s a great organ that allows you to remember past events; helps analyze current situations and also about what you would do ahead this moment. In short, it projects all of your thoughts, memories and estimations into the future.

It collects all information, compacts and re-wires the existing data, and integrates all into a consistent experience of an individual, both of yourself and of your surroundings. And ultimately that experience constitutes your reality. The brain shapes how you see your environment, analyzes and highlights the objects and information that is relevant to you.  Depending upon your thought process, emotional quotient, desires and the experiences, your brain will drive your behavior. To add on it even takes control over the behavioral Processes without your knowledge.

Well, thanks to recent progress in the medical field and imaging techniques, computer and processor technologies, the data analysis procedures and algorithms, with all of it the neuroscientists in academic and commercial fields of human behavioral science are able to combine methods in interesting, novel and insightful ways to go deep into the human brain and read how it shapes how it sees and how it interacts with the world.

The Electroencephalography, in short also known as EEG is one such procedure that helps experts to decode the brain activities in humans.

Here it records electrical activity and brain waves using electrodes placed on the scalp of the subject. Measuring electrical activity from the brain is useful as it reflects how different neurons in the brain network communicate with each other through electrical impulses.

The EEG can be supported by several reasons by which it stands as the best tool for studying the neurocognitive processes decoding human behavior –

  • The EEG has a very high time resolution that captures cognitive processes in the specific time frame in which cognition occurs. The Cognitive, perceptual, linguistic, and emotional and the motor processes are fast. Most of the cognitive processes occur within tens to hundreds of milliseconds which is much faster than the blink of an eye. In addition to this, events triggering cognitive processes occur in time sequences in a span of hundreds of milliseconds to a few seconds. Similar to the high-speed cameras used these days, however the EEG having high time resolution can capture the physiological changes monitoring the cognitive processes better than any other brain imaging techniques such as MRI or PET scanners which are widely used in hospitals.
  • It can measure the neural activity directly while your brain is constantly active, generating electrical activity which of course is very subtle but yet detectable with the right device. The EEG sensors then pick up these tiny signals from the scalp surface.
  • Though EEG is inexpensive, lightweight, and portable it is a much reliable device. By contrast, the EEG systems are portable, lightweight and this makes them more flexible for data collection in real-world environments compared to the MRI.
  • The Brain processes ultimately drives behavior in every individual. However, if what surprises you is subjects like mental processes such as response inhibition, creativity or meditation, the behavioral effects might relatively be very subtle. But by contrast, these processes are ideal choices for EEG as they are accompanied by interpretable electrical brain activation patterns.

Finally, with EEG, you can master insights into how the brain functions, which brain areas are active and how they interact with the outside environment. The story is not completely told yet, so come back for more on www.neuroconnect.in
