There’s no such thing as being too careful. Reasons to backup could be server crashes, a major update that causes problems for your site or the activity of hackers. There are hackers out there who can DDoS your site. Cyber threats can cripple you depending on the scale of the attack and they come in different ways. Despite any security measures you have in place, you can never be too safe because there are hackers who will always exploit vulnerabilities they detect. Backing up your site won’t take much time and your site can be up and running in no time. Backups also come in handy when are you moving your blog to another web host due to a myriad of reasons. There are web hosts who provide backups depending on the kind of hosting plan you have with them, but this service is not free. You can also use plugins to get the job done for you but I would advise you minimize the number of plugins you install. I believe the best way to back up your blog is to do it manually. I also know that being a blogger doesn’t automatically mean you are tech savvy. This is why this post will take you through steps that will help you to manually backup your WordPress blog.
There are both free and premium Plugins on WordPress available for backups. Updraftplus WordPress backup plugin is the most popular plugin on WordPress.It has more installs than any other plugin on the WordPress.It is free to use but has a premium feature which offers more. There is free dedicated expert support for the premium version.It also offers the option of backing up non WordPress files and databases to multiple remote destinations and the best feature that premium has is that it easily duplicates or migrates websites. If many people have found it useful maybe you can too. This blog prefers manual backups because cluttering your site with too many plugins can slow it down. If you would rather go the plugin way then it’s worth giving this one a shot. Other backups worthy of mention are Backwpup WordPress plugin, duplicator and vaultpress. All can help you to backup, clone and migrate your blog.
If you would rather avoid plugins and do it manually then follow the steps below. Plugins can be scheduled to do the backups for you and some offer a one-click restore but backing up manually means you decide when to do your backups.You will be backing up the files and database.lets start with site files backup. Open cPanel and migrate to file manager, you will find file manager under files.
click on file manager and select web root directory which will then take you to the page below
Make sure you have public_html selected so that the contents will appear in the box, select all and click on compress and this will give you the option of different compressing formats.Choose which format you desire and compress.Once its done saving you will see it in the box with whatever extension you used to compress it .In this post I used tar as you can see in the post below . Next, click on download and save it in possibly two locations.This is a download of your site files.
We move on to backing up your database now. Still in Cpanel, look for phpMyAdmin under databases. Databases are located just under files.
Click on phpMyAdmin and on the left hand side click on your site’s name and export which can be found on top.After doing that you should get this page on your screen.Notice It says exporting database and there are two methods by which you can export.Either quick or custom,for the purposes of this tutorial I will choose custom.
After selecting custom,make sure the format is SQL and click go.This will give you further options.You can compress them if you want or save the output as file.I choose to save it as file.There are advance options but don’t touch them unless you know what you are doing.Now you are done downloading your database.We now have two files,the first one is your site files and this one is your database.Quite easy,isn’t it?Now you can easily restore your blog should anything go wrong.
