Mysuru: The indefinite closing of schools due to this Covid-19 catastrophe has left the greater than 1 lakh Midday Meal Employees around Karnataka in dire straits. Taking cognisance of the gloomy scenario, the rural development and panchayat raj (RDPR) section of the state government has chosen to lend a helping hand by providing them jobs below the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
KG Jagadeesha, commissioner of the department of public education (DPI), intimated to the authorities that the distress which the pandemic had dropped the midday meal employees in. By virtue of being compensated a government honorarium, midday meal employees were denied work beneath MGNREGS, a barrier a government order announcing them qualified has cleared.
“Midday meal employees aren’t government employees. They get an honorarium for their work. Thus, we chose to hunt jobs for them beneath MGNREGS to help them ” Jagadeesha told TOI.
The rural development and panchayat raj division has written to each of the main executive officers (CEOs) of the zilla panchayat (ZP) around Karnataka, teaching them to problem job cards into midday meal employees in their respective authority. Jagadeesha explained that, with colleges remaining closed because April, midday meal employees were unable to discover a way of subsistence, also MGNREGS is bound to help them tide over the crisis. “All of panchayat development officers (PDOs) are requested to make sure they get work beneath the fundamental plot once their speeches are confirmed,” Jagadeesha explained.
A representative of their midday meal employees’ union S Varalakshmi explained that occupations beneath MGNREGS was one of the key demand after the closing of government colleges. “We obtained no honorarium in April and May. All that midday meal employees get as honorarium is Rs two,500 a month. According to our petition, the DPI commissioner wrote to the RDPR division, which has taught ZP officers to guarantee work for all of us beneath MGNREGS. We welcome the movement,” Varalaskhmi explained.
