The White House accused the Iran-backed Islamic Resistance Group in Iraq of killing three American soldiers at a military base in Jordan. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said yesterday that the US intelligence community believes the drone attack is attributable to this loose alliance of armed groups.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq is linked to the Popular Mobilization Forces, an Iranian-backed network of former paramilitary forces that are now part of the regular Iraqi army.

“We will respond at the appropriate time and in the manner that we believe is appropriate,” Kirby said. “Just because you haven't seen anything in the last 48 hours doesn't mean you won't see anything,” he added.

Pentagon: Three dead and more than 40 wounded

Three American soldiers were killed in the attack on a base near the border with Syria on Sunday evening. In addition, more than 40 soldiers were injured, the Pentagon said.

According to his own statements, US President Joe Biden has already decided on the US response to the attack, but he has not yet commented publicly on the plans or timing.
