Franz Welser Most says goodbye to the Cleveland Orchestra in 2027

The Austrian maestro, who has recently suffered from health problems such as a herniated disc and two cancer operations, has been at the head of the ensemble since 2002.

Passion and friendship

“It is a special and emotional moment when I think about what we have achieved together,” the conductor from Upper Austria was quoted in a live broadcast from the Orchestra. “The lasting friendship I've been able to build with our musicians, audiences and fans around the world.”

Since taking office in 2002, Welser Most, now 63, has hired 52 of the orchestra's current 105 musicians. “His passion, intellect, curiosity and deep understanding of music will be deeply missed,” said orchestra president Andre Grimelli.
