Elke Tschaikner’s guests are some artists from the ORF Festival, such as principal flutist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra Karl-Heinz Schütz, who will appear as a guest at this year’s musikrekord with the RSO Vienna under the baton of Maren Alsop. He plays the Austrian premiere of Klemens Gadenstadter’s Flute Concerto in Graz. Klangforum Wien will also be a guest on the Music Protocol, including a premiere by Indo-German composer Sandeep Bhagwati, who has been researching and teaching at Concordia University in Montreal since 2006. Sandeep Bhagwati, who frequently deals with topics such as postcolonialism in classical music, is also part of the discussion
As part of this year’s festival, Belarusian opposition activist Maria Kalesinkawa will be awarded an honorary doctorate from the Graz University of the Arts in absentia. Maria Kalesnikava has been in prison since 2020, and recently she has been no longer contactable and her fate is uncertain. Amnesty International and the European Parliament have repeatedly called for her unconditional release. Maria Kalesnikava is a flutist who studied in Stuttgart and works extensively with contemporary music. The honorary doctorate is meant to be a signal that she and her colleagues fighting for democracy and freedom in Belarus should not be forgotten. Wolfgang Hattinger, Chairman of the Senate of the Graz University of Art and Design, will report on this matter at Ö1 Klassik Treffpunkt.

The ORF music protocol at Steirischer Herbst was designed from the beginning as a media festival, and its biggest “venue” is radio. The concerts of the 56th edition of the festival can be experienced and heard in 25 music programs on Ö1. Especially in the “Zeit-Ton” series, listeners all over Austria and beyond can experience the 2023 music protocol.
