In memory of Marie-Thérèse Escribano | Sun | 01 10 2023 | 9:05

On September 25, singer and cabaret artist Marie-Therese Escribano died at the age of 98. As the daughter of a Belgian and a Spaniard, Marie-Thérèse Escribano moved a lot early on: she lived in Belgium, France and Spain, and in the 1950s the singer left Spain and France and came to the “City of Music” in Vienna, where she wanted to continue her singing training. As an artist, she was welcomed with open arms, awarded scholarships and supported. But she also came to a Vienna rife with occupying powers, poverty, the beginning of Reconstruction, and an unhappy reconciliation with the past. Vienna became the center of the singer’s life.

She was in great demand as an interpreter of contemporary music. Since March 1959 she has participated in the legendary avant-garde concerts of the “Die Reihe” ensemble conducted by Friedrich Serha. She made her debut with Pierre Boulez’s “Improvisations sur Mallarmé” and then sang mainly songs by Schoenberg, Webern, Berg, etc. Pierre Boulez also invited her to sing Schoenberg’s “Pierrot Lunaire” under his baton. Other conductors such as Loren Mazel, Paul Sacher and Mauricio Cagel enjoyed working with her at home and abroad. She was, along with Klaus and Michael Walter, one of the founders of the early music group “Les Menestrels”.

At the end of the seventies, Marie-Thérèse Escribano – after leaving electronic music – began to expand the field of her artistic activity to include cabaret and cabarets. Her experiences in Vienna in the 1950s, her life as a single woman, the songs of the 1930s, the tango, her experiences as a woman traveling alone – all of this flowed into her solo cabaret programs.

Marie-Thérèse Escribano worked as a singing and speaking teacher until old age. She did not like the term “voice coaching”, and preferred to organize “sound editing workshops”.

Marie-Therese Escribano has lived in Austria for more than 60 years, but it never became her home. “I suppose the term homeland is not important to me. I have no longing for homeland, I don’t believe in it! Because home always closes in and closes in on itself. For me, homeland is not a country, it is more people’s territory, a place of retreat. The country as a home is too dangerous for me!”
