Three Federal Judges blocked the planned division of seven constituencies. They criticized the Republican government and the party-dominated legislature for failing to comply with earlier judicial orders. The judges decided that the independent special representative should now redefine the constituencies. State officials have now announced they will appeal the decision to the US Supreme Court.

In 2022, federal judges in Alabama already rejected the first redistricting. According to the division now decided by Republicans, only one constituency has an African American majority. Politically, this is relevant because black voters typically vote for Democrats, not Republicans.

In all, there are legal disputes over redistricting in about half a dozen Republican-dominated states.
